It will boast three 3D metal printers, including one printer that is exclusively \u201caccredited for medical device manufacturing.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The facility will be available for businesses to undertake research, product development and validation testing. It will help carry the work of the <span class=\"s2\">IMCRC<\/span>, another joint venture between the University of Adelaide and CSIRO, launched in 2015 to accelerate Australian manufacturing and make cutting-edge technology available to businesses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In 2014, IPAS purchased a 14 x 14 x 10cm build volume Phenix PXM SLM 3D printer, which was <span class=\"s2\">made available<\/span> to local private companies. However, according to the University of Adelaide this new facility will now be the \u201conly metal additive manufacturing center in Australia that\u2019s available to companies on a commercial basis.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Adelaide University\u2019s Professor Julie Owens explained the significance of the facility as a culmination of current work in additive manufacturing in Australia.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis facility has been born out of three years\u2019 work by the University\u2019s Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing and the <span class=\"s2\">Optofab<\/span> Australian National Fabrication Facility\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">One of the advantages of the facility will be the removal of high cost barriers for local manufacturers. The centre, set up to address the problem of \u201cpopulation growth\u2026faster than local job growth\u201d, and to \u201caccelerate industrial transformation to counter jobs losses in mass manufacturing.\u201d Both facilities act as a national and regional hub for business development, and provides a physical collaborative space.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">South Australia cabinet minister for Manufacturing, Kyam Maher, stated that \u201cthe success of transforming the South Australian economy depends on our ability to adapt to new ways of doing things and establish advanced technologies to build globally competitive, high-value firms.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Maher added that &#8220;having the University of Adelaide support innovation in industries such as defence and health allows for better collaboration and fresh thinking and really helps promote our state as a world-leader in advanced and additive manufacturing.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_123463\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-123463\" src=\"https:\/\/3dprintingindustry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/stretton-centre-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Inside the Stretton Centre, which will house the plastics AM facility.
