{"id":68337,"date":"2019-07-29T12:55:55","date_gmt":"2019-07-29T04:55:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/aerospace\/mpa-to-launch-on-port-additive-manufacturing-facility-in-singapore.3dm"},"modified":"2019-07-29T12:55:55","modified_gmt":"2019-07-29T04:55:55","slug":"mpa-to-launch-on-port-additive-manufacturing-facility-in-singapore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/mpa-to-launch-on-port-additive-manufacturing-facility-in-singapore\/","title":{"rendered":"MPA to launch on-port additive manufacturing facility in Singapore"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"dpsp-content-top\" class=\"dpsp-content-wrapper dpsp-shape-rectangular dpsp-size-medium dpsp-has-spacing dpsp-has-buttons-count dpsp-show-on-mobile dpsp-button-style-1\">\n<ul class=\"dpsp-networks-btns-wrapper dpsp-networks-btns-content dpsp-networks-btns-share dpsp-column-auto\">\n<li><span class=\"dpsp-network-icon\"><\/span><span class=\"dpsp-network-label-wrapper\"><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"dpsp-network-icon\"><\/span><span class=\"dpsp-network-label-wrapper\"><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"dpsp-network-icon\"><\/span><span class=\"dpsp-network-label-wrapper\"><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"dpsp-network-icon\"><\/span><span class=\"dpsp-network-label-wrapper\"><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(MPA), a statutory body under the Ministry of Transport of Singapore Government, has signed two memoranda of understanding (MoU) relating the country\u2019s application of additive manufacturing in maritime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first MoU is signed with<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Port Singapore Authority International Pte Ltd<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (PSA), one of the largest port operators in the world, Singapore\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Cluster<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(NAMIC), <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and metal additive specialist <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3D MetalForge Pte Ltd<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the second MoU, the MPA enters into an agreement with NAMIC and the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Singapore Shipping Association<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(SSA). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Realizing the potential of 3D printing in the maritime industry, Ong Kim Pong, PSA\u2019s Regional CEO Southeast Asia, said, \u201cI am heartened that PSA, alongside MPA, NAMIC and 3D MetalForge can be pioneers in developing this technology for use in our industry,\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn close collaboration with EDB [Economic Development Board], we have learnt that the era of Additive Manufacturing is showing pervasive importance in industry transformation. Image via MPA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Digitalization in maritime<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier in 2018, the MPA signed another MoU with NAMIC agreeing to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">digitalize 3D printing manufacturing in the marine sector<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andrew Tan, Chief Executive of the MPA, explained this trend, &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a leading maritime hub, Singapore firmly believes that the maritime industry should embrace new technologies such as additive manufacturing. The digitalization of the maritime sector in all its aspects is not a matter of how but when.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Continuing progress to<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> make Singapore the center of sea-fairing 3D printed spare parts the MPA\u2019s first MoU with PSA, NAMIC, and 3D MetalForge, will focus on establishing a new 3D printing facility at Pasir Panjang Terminal, the most advanced terminal of the PSA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>A cutting edge 3D printing facility for Singapore maritime<\/b><\/p>\n<p>MoU signatory 3D MetalForge is one of the leading AM companies in Singapore. It is responsible for opening Singapore\u2019s first end-to-end metal 3D printing facility, the Additive Manufacturing Center (AMC) and already services the marine, and oil and gas industries.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, this project will fully employ a digital manufacturing framework. Image via Port Singapore Authority<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>The MPA, NAMIC and the SSA <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second MoU between MPA, NAMIC and the SSA is a Joint Industry Program. It is aimed at making Singapore a worldwide leader of 3D printed ship supplies. The project will fully exploit the 3D printing ecosystem set up by NAMIC to examine commercial aspects of the technology and its technical feasibility. It will also be responsible for drawing up regulatory guidelines for future use of 3D printing in the marine industry. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since 2017, NAMIC has been in a partnership with<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the Singapore-based shipbuilder, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sembcorp Marine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, global quality assurance and risk management company <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DNV GL<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A*Star\u2019s Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (SIMTech).
