There is also a development in the patent battle between <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VBN Components<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uddeholms<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read on for all the latest news regarding investments, educational innovations and international relations in the world of 3D printing.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>From engineering to cinema for BigRep<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BigRep<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a Berlin-based large scale 3D printer manufacturer, was behind the scenes for the Oscar nominated film \u2018First Man\u2019. For 6 months, the production team ran two BigRep ONE 3D printers to create a scale replica of the Apollo 11 capsule in the Neil Armstrong biopic.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/j.gifs.com\/q7RBPG.gif\" alt=\"The Apollo 11 replica from the film First Man. Based in New York, the company manufactures transit safety products. The BigRep Pro will double Boyce\u2019s 3D printing capacity, helping with the production of end-use components. Frank Marangell, President of BigRep America, explained: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Pro will be able to run all of the engineering grade materials that Boyce will need going forward so they&#8217;ll be able to expand the capabilities of the system, not just because of accuracy and speed, but also because of material properties. Photo via BigRep.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moving away from hardware, the Genoa 3DP Simulation software made by California-based <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AlphaSTAR<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been sourced by French industrial research institute <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IRT Jules Verne<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. By adding this software to its production process, IRT Jules Verne will minimise the trial and error of 3D printing, reduce waste and lower the overall cost of AM. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe needed software capable of analysing the materials, modelling the AM process and accurately replicating composite SLS &amp; FFF printing methods,\u201d stated Tuan Linh Nguyen, R&amp;D Simulation Engineer at IRT. \u201cWith advanced features, such as analysis of temperature-dependent material properties beyond glass transition temperature and the high compatibility with our numerical tools, we felt Genoa 3DP was the perfect fit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, in other news, the call for papers is now open for the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additive Manufacturing Conference 2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Photo via Additive Manufacturing Conference.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>3D printing legal disputes settled<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swedish company <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VBN components<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a manufacturer of metal materials suitable for 3D printing, has won a patent battle against <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uddeholms AB<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Uddeholms, also based in Sweden, is a manufacturer of tool steel. The dispute between the two companies began when Uddeholms contested VBN\u2019s first patent regarding high purity in high carbon content materials in 2013. The dispute was settled in December 2018 at the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">European Patent Office<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (EPO) in Munich, with the Boards of Appeal ruling in favour of VBN Components.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are, of course, very pleased to have confirmed at the highest instance that our material technology is ground-breaking and with full IP protection,\u201d says Ulrik Beste, CTO of VBN Components AB.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Staying in the vicinity of a court, six democrats have filed a legislation aiming to prohibit the 3D printing of firearms in the state of Georgia. The bill was sponsored by State Representative Roger Bruce, and seeks specifically to eliminate the ability of any individual or entity to 3D print  certain firearms. In a welcoming bid to attract foreign companies with high-end technologies, South Korea will be offering better incentives and improved regulations by integrating new services and technologies. The headphones are an ear cleaning device for clinical use, that uses disposable nozzles to spray and extract a warm saline solution against the walls of the ear canal. SafKan relied on Protolabs\u2019 expertise in Polyjet 3D printing to create the product. Each year, the Cool Idea! program from Protolabs grants an aggregate of up to $250,000 in Protolabs manufacturing services. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s pretty easy to design headphones on your computer and 3D print it,\u201d said co-founder Sahil Diwan. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBut then you need to take that to the next level and start to commercialize it. Photo via Protolabs.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elsewhere, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The National Institute of Standards and Technology<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (NIST) has also awarded a grant, worth $25 million dollars, to Chicago-based <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Center for Hierarchical Materials Design <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(CHiMaD). CHiMaD aim to accelerate the pace of new materials discovery using theoretical, computational, and experimental science. Since 2014, nearly 300 CHiMaD and NIST investigators have worked on developing inks for 3D printing amongst a host of other new materials. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>3D printing racing its way into schools<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In education, an art exhibition at the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University of Texas at El Paso<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s (UTEP) Rubin Center took place, exploring different elements of the U.S.\u2019s Western Sun Belt\u2019s environment. Called \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sections: New Cities Future Ruins<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d, the exhibition features a series of 170 3D printed ceramic objects, made from native clay materials. This was produced through a collaboration between artists Ronald Rael and Virginia San Fratello, founders of California design company <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emerging Objects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and UTEP students. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur new 3D printer is an incredible tool that will provide our students with a great opportunity to learn a new skill that more and more artists are using around the world,\u201d said Vincent Burke, an associate professor of art who specializes in ceramics at UTEP. \u201cIt\u2019s a game changer for us. It\u2019s really remarkable. The key is using it in the service of art and ideas that reflect our unique individual voices.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Xe1tU5cJPVc\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elsewhere, \u20ac425,000 has been awarded to the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National University of Ireland Galway<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (NUI Galway) for its bacterial infection project. NUI Galway has been working on new technology for faster clinical detection and diagnosis of bacterial infections. It received the award as part of a government investment of \u20ac10.8 million in Irish research funding. The research project will utilise 3D printing to create compact diagnostic devices that will indicate the presence of specific bacteria through colour changes, potentially benefiting patient outcomes and quality of life. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children from primary schools across Carmarthenshire in Wales will take part in a 3D printed remote control car race. The futuristic Formula 3D Circuit Race project will be led by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swansea University\u2019s<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">College of Engineering<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in partnership with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carmarthenshire County Council.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The primary schools are now working on making and assembling their remote control cars, using 3D printers donated by Swansea University. Based in the same location, Exact Metrology offer scanning services and metrology equipment solutions. The original statue was put up in 1919, and is perched upon a monument commemorating those who served during the First World War. Wanting to preserve the statue, the museum worked with Exact Metrology to scan a replica in the museum using <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Artec 3D<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> scanners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And finally, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adidas<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has unveiled a new iteration of its Y-3 4D Runner, made in collaboration with California-based 3D printer and materials manufacturer <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carbon<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. a The trainer features a 3D printed midsole using Carbon <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FUTURECRAFT 4D<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> technology, with this newest design draped in a bright, eye-catching red.
