This acquisition is part of the company\u2019s innovations strategy which aims to access a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Total Addressable Market (TAM) of $8 billion for additive\/digital manufacturing.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span>Xerox and Vader Systems declined to provide further details on the acquisition or the longer term strategy for 3D printing covered by Joanne Collins Smee and Steve Hoover during the investor day.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_84012\" style=\"width: 688px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-84012\" src=\"https:\/\/3dprintingindustry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Mk_1_Experimental_Vader_Systems.jpg\" alt=\"The Mk 1 Experimental metal 3D printer from Vader Systems. Image via Vader Systems.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Xerox and 3D printing<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2016, Janos Veres, the leader of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Palo Alto Research Center <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(PARC) Novel and Printed Electronics Program at XEROX, explained that the company\u2019s planned transformation would involve <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3D printing and Industry 4.0 technologies<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then in 2017, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PARC<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was selected by US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, DARPA, to develop \u201ca new computational paradigm\u201d that goes beyond the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">limitations of existing 3D design platforms<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following this, John Visentin CEO of Xerox announced on an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">investor call last year<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the company is \u201cdeveloping a roadmap to participate in 3D printing.\u201d Visentin stated:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are developing a roadmap to participate in 3D printing. Image via Xerox.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Vader Systems Magnet-o-jet technology<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Founded in 2013, Vader Systems developed and patented metal 3D printing technology referred to as Magnet-o-Jet. This process, as described by Zach Vader, co-founder of Vader Systems, \u201ctakes in metal wire feedstock that gets melted into a ceramic nozzle.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis makes a small pool [weighing] about 2 grams, the metal is always molten in the nozzle and then we use electromagnetism to induce a current and a radial inward force that produces a droplet.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_132935\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-132935\" src=\"https:\/\/3dprintingindustry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/The-magnet-o-jet-liquid-metal-3D-printing-subsystem.-Image-via-Vader-Systems.jpg\" alt=\"The magnet-o-jet liquid metal 3D printing subsystem. Image via Vader Systems,<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is done on each droplet using an electrical pulse at a rate of 1000 times a second, which results in a high deposition rate. The technology is integrated into the company\u2019s first system, the MK1 Experimental metal 3D printer, and its<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> three newer systems<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Vader Polaris, the Magnet-o-Jet Subsystem, and the Ares Microsphere Production System.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Magnet-o-jet technology is said to expand the range of conductive metals used within metal additive manufacturing. Such limitations within industrial additive manufacturing are also being addressed by the University of Nottingham, who established an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">additive manufacturing research lab in 2015<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with custom metal-jetting systems.
