The successor to the S55, the new M straight-six engine features a cylinder head core manufactured using 3D printing technology. The 3D printed part helps contribute to the lowest possible weight of the vehicle and supports thermal management. Image via BMW BLOG.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In another application of 3D printing, Olympic rower Sara Bertolasi used a 3D printed seat to overcome a career-threatening injury. Bertolasi suffered from inflammation around the pelvis during preparations for the Olympic games in 2016, where she spent hours rowing on Lake Varese in northern Italy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The professional rower then spoke to Martina Ballerio, manager of the 3D printing unit at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elmec Informatica<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which led the custom design of a new seat for Bertolasi. The seat was 3D printed using <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HP\u2019s Multi Jet Fusion 3D printer<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HP 3D High Reusability PA 12 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thermoplastic. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe want to develop new ideas, new designs, and new methods,\u201d Ballerio said. \u201cThis is what Elmec3D is trying to do as a company: to give them the tools to innovate their manufacturing process.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_149769\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-149769\" src=\"https:\/\/3dprintingindustry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/elmec_seat2-300x254.png\" alt=\"3D printed seat for Bertolasi\u2019s training scull. Photo via Elmec.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other news, Maritime Heritage Minnesota, a non-profit organization specializing in nautical archaeology and maritime history, has been using the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">iSense<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to scan small and rare Minnesota watercraft. Using the iPad 3D scanner in conjunction with opensource mesh software to combine data, the organization has been scanning watercraft held in museums and private collections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>IN(3D)USTRY changes to INDUSTRY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IN(3D)USTRY<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fira de Barcelona<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fair devoted to additive manufacturing has changed its name to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">INDUSTRY<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The change comes with the event now in its fourth year and was made to include more sectors and new areas of industry, covering the entire value chain. INDUSTRY, from Needs to Solutions will he held from 29 to 31 October 2019 in Pavilion 8 of Fira de Barcelona&#8217;s Montju\u00efc venue. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to INDUSTRY director Miquel Serrano, &#8220;This year&#8217;s fair will consolidate the path initiated by the one last year, incorporating new industrial sectors.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe fact that Catalonia accounts for a quarter of Spanish industry and the sector&#8217;s current situation, immersed in the 4.0 revolution, make a fair like ours, with an increasingly industrial nature, more necessary than ever.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>The Philipines establishes the first Advanced Manufacturing Centre <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Philippines <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Department of Science and Technology<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (DOST) is set to unveil the first Advanced Manufacturing Centre (AMCen) for 3D printing research in the country. The AMCen aspires to innovate 3D printing technologies, processes, and materials for the Philippines in various industries, including aerospace, biomedical and automotive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Enrico C. Paringit, Executive Director of the DOST-Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD), commented \u201cAdditive manufacturing has limitless potentials &#8211; from aircrafts and automobile to medical and fashion applications &#8211; it is possible to create products for the same or lower cost without compromising quality.\u201d  <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are hopeful that with the establishment of AMCen we can see more researches geared towards this cutting-edge technology.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, California-based 3D printing company <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Airwolf 3D<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is holding what it claims to be the first 3D printer tent sale at its Southern California manufacturing facility. The company is looking to offload all of its all HD and XL Legacy machines in order to make room for incoming <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EVO<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EVO22<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> inventory. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Brexit&#8217;s impact on the manufacturing industry<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Continuing on in the theme of name changes, EEF, the Manufacturers\u2019 Organization focused on creating a supportive environment for UK manufacturers, has re-launched as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make UK<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at its annual <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Manufacturing Conference<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The firm said it \u201cwas time for the EEF to adopt a modern name designed to reflect the world class innovation undertaken by our member companies across the whole of the country.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The organization has also taken a vocal stance on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brexit<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, establishing warnings of a no-deal scenario. Photo via Protolabs.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Berlin-based <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WillowFlex<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the organic filament Kickstarter project from material company <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BioInspiration<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has spun off as an independent company. It will focus on developing 3D printing filament for industrial production. The change is a response to the serial production of additive manufacturing, where there is a need for reliable materials with consistent quality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Digital Badges for additive manufacturing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ohio-based additive manufacturing accelerator America Makes has awarded a $70,000 award grant to Fab Lab Hub LLC, a part of the international Fab Lab network. Fab Lab Hub was founded in 2010 to innovate learning opportunities for the New Collar workforce. The partnership with America Makes aims to expand opportunities for careers in the 3D printing industry. Photo by Beau Jackson<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) has announced it has awarded the Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute (DMDII) at UI LABS $10 million in funding and pledged at least $20 million more over the next five years.<\/p>\n<p>Industrial 3D printing takes a central role in DMDII&#8217;s mission to drive the digital future of manufacturing, and the funding will help DMDII further towards its goals. Previosuly, the DOD has seed funded DMDII to launch a $750,000 Cyber Hub for Manufacturing intending to tackle the issue of cyber-espionage attacks against the manufacturing sector.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/z7U4mVVyoB8\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>At TCT Asia 2019, Netherlands-based 3D printing company Additive Industries has signed an Agency Agreement with Beijing-based metal additive manufacturing specialist Sinsun-Tech Corporation Ltd.  The partnership aims to develop the Chinese market for industrial 3D metal printing systems.
