Speaking with investors and analysts, Elan Jaglom, Interim Chief Executive Officer of Stratasys, stated that while he was satisfied with financial performance macroeconomic conditions meant, \u201cOverall revenue was unfavorably impacted relative to the corresponding previous year period by unfavorable changes in foreign exchange rates.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lilach Payorski, CFO at Stratasys, gave further details, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our total revenue grew 5%, and hardware actually grew 7% if you take other FX [foreign exchange], consumable 5% and services grew 2% and the customer support grew 4.5%. Image via Stratasys.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Revenue consistency  <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Revenue at Stratasys is divided across systems, consumables, customer support, products and services. The company\u2019s product revenue in the first quarter stood at $105.1 million, which also remains flat when compared to Q1 2018. Similarly, gross profit remains stable at $76.5 million from $75.7 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Responding to an analyst query about a dip in revenue from customer support <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Payorski said the business unit <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will return to a more typical growth rate moving forward. Image via Stratasys.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Cutting costs with R&amp;D<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Demand for high-end 3D printing systems such as the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">F123 platform<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortus 380mc Carbon Fiber Edition<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, contributed to cash flow from operating activities of $4.6 million, a decrease from the $27.1 million in Q1 2018. However, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">period ended with $367.8 million in cash and cash equivalents, a<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> decrease on the comparative figure of $393.2 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Payorski continued,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Non-GAAP operating expenses decreased by 3% to $73.9 million for the first quarter as compared to the same period last year, driven by a continued focus on administrative cost controls, R&amp;D project timing and the impact of divestments.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, the R&amp;D level for this quarter was reported to be lower than previous figures.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_154859\" style=\"width: 1280px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-154859\" src=\"https:\/\/3dprintingindustry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/11.jpg\" alt=\"Stratasys Q1 2019 balance sheet summary. Image via Stratasys.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Is Stratasys preparing for an acquisition?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier this year, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EOS<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acquired<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vulcan Labs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Texas-based powder bed fusion R&amp;D startup from Stratasys. Some may be wondering why Stratasys would sell technology to a major competitor. Could the lengthy search for a CEO, the ongoing focus on trimming expenses coupled with lower R&amp;D investment point toward preparing the company for acquisition or a merger?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Addressing one element of the above, Jaglom explained why the company&#8217;s search for a new CEO is taking longer than expected. \u201cOur industry does not have a wide pool of established leaders to choose from so we\u2019re looking outside the additive industry which adds complexity to our search.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, new products do still continue to launch. Photo via Stratasys.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Stratasys 2019 forecast and guidance<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nevertheless, the company\u2019s full-year guidance for 2019 has projected revenue at the end of this fiscal year to be between $670 to $700 million. This would be a significant increase from the full year revenue<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported in 2018<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of $663.2 million. In addition, GAAP net loss of $22 million to $12 million, or $0.40 to $0.22 per diluted share, is projected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The projected revenue is in part expected from the acceleration of adoption in Stratasys\u2019 production systems.
