Gemma adds, &#8220;These cell chips can evaluate the diversity of human responses of chemicals at one time in terms of efficacy and toxicity before moving to the clinical trial stage.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;In the process of drug discovery, this method using the cell chips will greatly improve the entire drug development process because human diversity is considered in the earliest stage.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_157353\" style=\"width: 866px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-157353\" src=\"https:\/\/3dprintingindustry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/3d_bio_01.jpg\" alt=\"Illustration of the cell differentiation, 3D bioprinting and drug discovery process. Image via Ricoh<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Developing products for drug discovery<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells are capable of differentiating into many different types of cells depending on the introduction of different genes. They are at the core of current efforts in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine as they can be used to create copies of diseased tissue. These &#8220;copies&#8221; can then be tested using different drugs to understand how the body may react to new treatments.<\/p>\n<p>Elixirgen Scientific, which was founded in 2016, has developed its own Quick-Tissue technology which is capable of producing iPS cells. With Quick-Tissue, homogeneous cell samples can be produced within 10 days.<\/p>\n<p>According to Ricoh, it has been developing 3D bioprinting technology capable of working with iPS cells for the past 40 years. Inkjet based, the technology in question has four functions as described by the company:<\/p>\n<p>1. Cell ink preparation<br \/>\n2. Precision 3D printing (using inkjet printheads)<br \/>\n3. Cell cultivation and,<br \/>\n4. The inspection of cellular constructs<\/p>\n<p>In this new partnership, Elixirgen and Ricoh will combine their expertise to develop biomedical products and service to support further drug discovery.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NN81fjyNoXY\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>A &#8220;$1.86 billion business by 2025&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to the partners, over the next five to six years (by 2025) Ricoh and Elixirgen&#8217;s new biomedical initiative is targeted to grow into a \u00a520 billion ($1.86 billion) business.
