The Pennsylvania-based company plans to use the 3D printer to manufacture large, complex parts, growing the use of additive in the transportation industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Bringing 3D printing to the rail industry<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wabtec provides parts to most major rail transit systems in the world. Its portfolio includes a number of highly-engineered metal components and systems which it which it produces in over 100 manufacturing plants. So far, the company has identified that additive technologies could be used in the production of up to 250 components in its product lines by 2025. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With GE\u2019s H2 Binder Jet Printer the company will be able to create spare parts to order, thereby reducing customers\u2019 inventory requirements while supplying them within very short lead times. Photo via GE Additive.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Investing in Binder Jet technology<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Binder jetting processes use two materials \u2013 a powder base, and liquid binder. The material H2 currently uses for producing parts is Stainless Steel 316, however other materials are under development including low carbon steels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The H2 is a successor of GE\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">H1 binder jet metal 3D printer<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, first teased by the company in 2017. Since that point, GE binder jet development of the H2 has remained largely in stealth mode, only <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recently releasing a beta<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GE expects the H2 to be commercially available in early 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last month, American manufacturer and remanufacturer of engines <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cummins<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Inc. became the first company to adopt GE Additive\u2019s beta version of the H2 metal binder jet 3D printing technology. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThroughout 2018, a multi-disciplinary team at GE Additive developed the second generation <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">H2 binder jet beta machines. Today, parts are being printed on those machines, which we <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">understand provide the largest format and fastest build speed currently on the market,\u201d said <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Josh Mook, innovation leader at GE Additive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Additive manufacturing for the railway industry<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rail industry is increased using additive manufacturing, for example the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mobility Goes Additive<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">project originating at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deutsche Bahn<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The project brings together a network of companies from the mobility and logistics business in order to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">advance the application of additive manufacturing<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with a particular focus on the production of spare parts for the transportation sector. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elsewhere, initiatives such as the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">instillation of Stratasys F900 3D printer<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Bombardier\u2019s Hennigsdorf facility in Berlin, and a partnership from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Angel Trains and ESG Rail<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stratasys <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to 3D print replacement parts for trains are also helping additive to make gains in the rail sector.   <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_126073\" style=\"width: 2048px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-126073 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/3dprintingindustry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/GEADPR003a.jpg\" alt=\"The prototype H1 binder jet 3D printer from GE Additive.
