The challenge was for proposals to meet a deadline to design 3D printable concrete that can be deposited at depths of several meters underwater within a year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Cornell team, led by Assistant Professor Sriramya Nair at Cornell\u2019s Duffield School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, was awarded a $1.4m grant \u2013 contingent on benchmarks \u2013 in May 2025, and is up against five other teams.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The key requirement from DARPA was that the concrete be made primarily from seafloor sediment, with only a small amount of cement added in order to minimize the final solution\u2019s shipping logistics. In September, the Cornell team performed a successful demo for visiting DARPA officials, which showed how close they were to achieving the specified sediment levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"background-color: #eaeaea7a;padding: 15px 30px;align-items: center;border-radius: 4px;box-shadow: -1px 4px 20px 0px #dedede;margin-top: 1em;margin-bottom: 1em\">\n<div style=\"flex: 1;padding-right: 30px\">\n<h4 style=\"margin-bottom: 14px\">Manufacturing on Demand<\/h4>\n<div>Realize your creation with full capabilities, expand your business from prototyping to mass production.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" style=\"background-color: #0baee8;color: white;padding: 10px 20px;border-radius: 4px\"><i aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"fa-fw auxicon auxicon-cloud-upload\"><\/i> Get Quote<\/a><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The challenge is significant: cement p<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/art\" target=\"_blank\">art<\/a>icles fail to bind underwater, which causes washout, and countering this with the addition of admixture chemicals increases viscosity to a level that makes pumping the solution extremely difficult, if not impossible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The work is pioneering in the field. \u201cNobody is doing this right now,\u201d explained Nair. \u201cNobody takes seafloor sediment and prints with it. This is opening up a lot of opportunities for reimagining what concrete could look like.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nair\u2019s team draws on a wide range of specialized expertise due to the complexities of the project.
