The new developments are expected to enable the building of shelters, the reinforcement of infrastructure, and the construction of bridges in inaccessible areas.<\/p>\n<p>Aerial AM \u2013 basically flying 3D printers \u2013 has been fascinating researchers for years, but the natural instability of a <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/drone\" target=\"_blank\">drone<\/a> in flight makes traditional layer-by-layer fabrication nearly impossible. To overcome this, Amir Barati Farimani, associate professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/mechanics\" target=\"_blank\">mechanic<\/a>al engineering, has equipped <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/drone\" target=\"_blank\">drone<\/a>s with magnetic blocks to allow for precise pick-and-place assembly and a large language model (LLM) that can translate high-level design goals like \u2018build a bridge\u2019 into executable plans.<\/p>\n<p>   <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/7677524853400289463.jpg\" class=\"aligncenter\"> <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe adaptability of LLMs allows us to generate and adapt building plans onsite. Because the <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/drone\" target=\"_blank\">drone<\/a>s were monitored by a camera, if they dropped a block in the wrong position, left a gap, or built inefficiently, the LLM autonomously prompted the <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/drone\" target=\"_blank\">drone<\/a> to work with the error from a new plan rather than st<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/art\" target=\"_blank\">art<\/a>ing over. Thanks to this closed feedback loop, construction builds were successful 90% of the time.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can imagine this tool filling potholes, fixing spaceships in orbit, and constructing infrastructure in mountainous regions where&nbsp;heavy machinery&nbsp;can\u2019t reach,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Moving forward, the Carnegie Mellon University team plans to test their <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/drone\" target=\"_blank\">drone<\/a>s outside of the lab to address future real-world challenges.
