G\u00fcrsoy seeks to overcome the challenges of <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/service\/3d-printing-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3D printing<\/a> concrete structures on indefinite surfaces in an effort to reduce the <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/environment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">environment<\/a>al effects of housing construction.<\/p>\n<p>G\u00fcrsoy, director of the&nbsp;Form and Matter (ForMat) Lab&nbsp;in the&nbsp;Stuckeman Center for Design Computing&nbsp;(SCDC), leads faculty and student researchers in the College of Arts and Architecture\u2019s Stuckeman School and the College of Engineering on the work.<\/p>\n<p>Although robotic arms provide precision and control in the fabrication process of concrete structures, they are limited in sensing the <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/environment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">environment<\/a> and responding to it accordingly. In her proposal, Benay G\u00fcrsoy\u2019s ForMat Lab team \u2013 in collaboration with the Additive Construction Lab (AddConLab) and the Control and Autonomous Robotics Lab (CARL) \u2013 will scan and digitally reconstruct the robot\u2019s work <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/environment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">environment<\/a> in small-scale robotic fabrication <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/insights\/applications\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">application<\/a>s and apply it to large-scale concrete <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/service\/3d-printing-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3D printing<\/a> workflows. The team will use a system developed by \u00d6zg\u00fc\u00e7 \u00c7apunaman, ForMat Lab researcher and architectural doctoral candidate, as p<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">art<\/a> of his doctoral research.<\/p>\n<p>Titled \u201cA Vision-Based Sensing Framework for Adaptive Robotic Additive Manufacturing of Concrete on Indefinite Surfaces and Real-Time Monitoring of the 3D Printing Process,\u201d the project is also integral to the <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/architecture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">architecture<\/a> doctoral research of Paniz Farrokhsiar, a ForMat Lab and AddConLab member. However, the <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/service\/3d-printing-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3D printing<\/a> process brings about critical challenges that affect the structural stability and the quality of the 3D printed concrete structures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the researchers, the developed system will allow the precise digital reconstruction and registration of the work <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/environment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">environment<\/a> prior to robotic tooling operations; <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/service\/3d-printing-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3D printing<\/a> concrete on indefinite surfaces; real-time monitoring of the <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/service\/3d-printing-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3D printing<\/a> process; adjusting the system in real-time to fix the errors; and formwork-less <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/service\/3d-printing-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3D printing<\/a>. This system feeds into AddCon Lab\u2019s ongoing effort to develop means to automatically monitor and control the concrete printing process.<\/p>\n<p>Co-principal investigators from Penn State on the project are: Jos\u00e9 Pinto Du<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">art<\/a>e, director of the SCDC and Stuckeman Chair in Design Innovation; Sven Bil\u00e9n, professor of engineering design, electrical engineering, and <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/aerospace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">aerospace<\/a> engineering; and Donald Ebeigbe, assistant professor of electrical engineering and CARL director in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.<\/p>\n<p>Shadi Nazarian, former associate research professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/architecture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">architecture<\/a> in the Stuckeman School who is now the H.
