As nations around the world race for hypersonic supremacy, for hypersonic missiles (in what is still a relatively mild arms race) as well as for any future hypersonic <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/automotive\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vehicle<\/a>, Northrop Grumman is perfecting SCRAM C\/C, Northrop Grumman is looking to SCRAM, Scalable Composite Robotic Additive Manufacturing, an additive manufacturing-based rapid fabrication process that produces superior, high-temperature materials at up to half the cost and schedule.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/aerospace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">aerospace<\/a> &amp; defense company is also using <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/service\/3d-printing-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3D printing<\/a> to develop and build the scramjet engine of its Hypersonic Air-breathing Weapon Concept, or HAWC, for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and the U.S. Air Force. In this case, though, the term refers to \u201csupersonic combustion ramjet\u201d, which is a variant of a ramjet airbreathing jet engine in which combustion takes place in supersonic airflow.<\/p>\n<p>Both technologies, though not directly related, will be used to achieve hypersonic capabilities. Scalable Composite Robotic Additive Manufacturing Carbon\/Carbon (SCRAM C\/C) is an industrial robotic 3D printer with the ability to layer continuous fiber-reinforced thermoplastics into components that meet the unique demands of hypersonic <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/automotive\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vehicle<\/a>s.<\/p>\n<p>   <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/4679581058066629343.jpg\" class=\"aligncenter\">  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHypersonic means traveling faster than Mach 5 \u2014 or well over 3,000 mph, depending on the altitude \u2014 which generates a lot of friction with air molecules,\u201d said Tim Dominick, a Technical Fellow leading the Propulsion Systems and Controls team in Elkton, Maryland, that is developing this technology. \u201cTemperatures can reach thousands of degrees Fahrenheit, and only a few metals can survive at those temperatures \u2014 but they are extremely heavy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>SCRAM C\/C technology can be used to create high-temperature materials that do not erode, melt or change shape when exposed to extreme temperatures. They are also lighter than the metals traditionally used, lowering the weight of a hypersonic <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/automotive\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vehicle<\/a> and improving performance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/service\/3d-printing-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3D printing<\/a>, often referred to as additive manufacturing, also allows designers to create unique shapes, meaning components that were once multiple pieces bolted or welded together can now be manufactured as one piece.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve manufactured a p<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">art<\/a> that st<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">art<\/a>ed with a circular cross-section, swept through an S shape and ended in a rectangular cross-section,\u201d Dominick said. \u201cThat\u2019s an extremely complex geometry that in the past was only possible to create by hand and could take up to a year to make.
