His team consists of assistant professor&nbsp;Dr. Maria Koliou, dep<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">art<\/a>ment head and professor&nbsp;Dr. Zachary Grasley, and&nbsp;professor&nbsp;Dr. Anand Puppala&nbsp;from the dep<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">art<\/a>ment,&nbsp;and associate professor&nbsp;Dr. Manish Dixit&nbsp;and professor&nbsp;Dr. Wei Yan&nbsp;from the Texas A&amp;M College of Architecture.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/9082195312544812453.jpg\" class=\"aligncenter\">   Dr. Petros Sideris will lead the research to develop residential and potential construction designs using hempcrete. Image:&nbsp;Texas A&amp;M Engineering   <\/p>\n<p>Hempcrete is made by mixing hemp powder, fibers or shives with lime and water, creating a lightweight, green building material. While it is considered an extremely sustainable and strong material it is also, intuitively, very difficult to proficiently 3D print. Now the Texas A&amp;M researchers will use <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/service\/3d-printing-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3D printing<\/a> in this project to create building designs that achieve structural and <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">energy<\/a> performance to comply with modern design codes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHempcrete has excellent fire resistance and thermal insulating properties that can reduce heating and cooling <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">energy<\/a> demands,\u201d he said. \u201cIt is water-resistant and offers good acoustic properties.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As p<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">art<\/a> of the project, building designs will be printable and created to achieve structural and <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">energy<\/a> performance that will comply with modern design codes. Sideris said digital designs of printable hempcrete buildings will facilitate adoption by the construction industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe advancements of this project will contribute to the U.S. maintaining its worldwide leadership in advanced construction methods and infrastructure sustainability and resilient technologies,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The funding is p<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">art<\/a> of HESTIA, which prioritizes overcoming barriers associated with carbon-storing buildings, including scarce, expensive and geographically limited building materials.
