A master\u2019s student from the Florida International University (FIU) \u2013 Brandon Aguiar \u2013 seems to be a promising player within the industry.<\/p>\n<p>Aguiar is developing a <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/service\/3d-printing-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3D printing<\/a> technique that makes durable structures out of lunar dust, and has already produced igloos, building blocks, and cubes with complex angles and curvatures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very expensive to ship supplies to space. One pound of material can cost thousands of dollars,\u201d said Aguiar. \u201cJust imagine what it would cost taxpayers to ship entire houses to the moon. Instead, we can use the material that is already there to build infrastructure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/8088780704998356717.jpeg\" class=\"aligncenter\">   Source: Florida International University (FIU).   <\/p>\n<p>Lunar dust is a powder consisting of tiny, irregularly-shaped rocks. It covers the moon and can present a potential hazard for astronauts. The weather in Miami is super hot, but somewhere in the northwest, it\u2019s still freezing. The same happens when you are on the moon,\u201d said Nisar. \u201cAny material that is used needs to withstand extreme thermal shock.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Aguiar joins other researchers around the country who are focused on making structures out of lunar dust. In p<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">art<\/a>icular, Aguiar is focused on finding a way to manufacture the structures to withstand the harshest elements of space \u2013 the key to which is getting the parameters of the <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/service\/3d-printing-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3D printing<\/a> and treatment process right. He does this by mixing the space dust with a glue-like resin to bind the small rocks together. Source: Florida International University (FIU).   <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I\u2019m teaching my new students, I always use the example of cooking to explain materials engineering,\u201d said Professor Arvind Agarwal, director of the Plasma Forming Laboratory. \u201cYou can make a chicken into either grilled chicken or fried chicken. The taste is completely different, but the st<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">art<\/a>ing material is the same. The same goes for lunar dust used in Brandon\u2019s research. By modifying how he \u2018cooks\u2019 the dust, he can completely change how his structures perform.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brandon Aguiar will continue his research on a Presidential Fellowship as a Ph.D. student at FIU this fall. His <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/service\/3d-printing-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3D printing<\/a> method and parameters are pending patents and were recently published in a journal.
