We had the chance to sit down with Henrik Lund-Nielsen, the founder of COBOD International, to chat about what has been going on at COBOD lately. Read on to find out about COBOD\u2019s exciting future.<\/p>\n

Many people associate 3D construction printing technology with printing relatively small-scale housing, but the scope of application<\/a>s goes far beyond just that. COBOD, the leading 3D construction printing hardware company in the world, has now recognized a growing demand for large-scale tanks used in water treatment facilities as well as biogas plants and has therefore start<\/a>ed making the tanks by using their printing technology.<\/p>\n

Henrik Lund-Nielsen, founder and CEO of COBOD International <\/p>\n

A lot has happened at COBOD lately, so we took the chance to sit down with the company\u2019s founder Henrik Lund-Nielsen, who gave us further insight into what they\u2019re doing now, and his vision for the upcoming future at COBOD and in the global concrete 3D printing<\/a> segment.<\/p>\n

COBOD has been present in the 3D construction printing industry for quite a few years now. Back in 2017, they printed Europe\u2019s first 3D printed building, named \u201cBOD\u201d, which gave the company quite a bit of media exposure.<\/p>\n

Going large<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Ever since the \u201dBOD\u201d project, COBOD has been growing at a fast pace, undertaking more challenging projects as time went by. Backed by GE Renewable Energy, PERI Group, Holcim, and Cemex, who acquired a smaller stake in the company, COBOD managed to become a leading company in what is a still small sector of 3D construction printing.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere the construction printing technology can have the biggest bang for the buck is not within housing because there are so many costs in housing projects, which we can\u2019t touch\u201d, Lund-Nielsen said when explaining why COBOD has focused on application<\/a>s besides just housing.<\/p>\n

Utilizing COBOD\u2019s technology in projects where reinforced concrete is a much larger part<\/a> of the total cost of the project will drive the cost reductions even higher. \u201cSo that\u2019s why we start<\/a>ed looking for these industrial application<\/a>s that are much rawer, like industrial warehouses, wind turbine towers and tanks\u201d Lund-Nielsen explained.<\/p>\n

Currently, the most efficient and cost-effective way to utilize COBOD\u2019s 3D construction printing technology is by printing reinforced concrete structures which can be made faster and cheaper by printing.<\/p>\n

COBOD has the edge over its competitors when it comes to the ability to print tall, large-scale industrial structures. \u201cThis is something that our printers are really good at. We know a lot about it because of our windmill experience with GE\u201d, Lund-Nielsen said, alluding to the experience COBOD has gained in making large-scale concrete bases for wind turbines for GE.<\/p>\n

Regarding similar large-scale application<\/a>s, COBOD is currently focusing on printing biogas tanks, as well as tanks and part<\/a>s for the water infrastructure. Lund-Nielsen especially believes in the biogas industry, claiming it to be a booming market in the European Union and the US. \u201cAlone the EU is estimating the number of biogas plants to double by 2030, which would require 20.000 new facilities with more than 100.000 new tanks\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The future for biogas is looking bright, especially in this day and age where being independent of fossil Russian gas, when it comes to energy<\/a> sources, is hugely important.<\/p>\n

Biogas can be used as a replacement for this gas and function as a fuel, or as a source of heat and\/or electricity. It\u2019s usually produced from manure via a process called anaerobic digestion. What that means is that while the manure is being disintegrated by various microorganisms in absence of oxygen, biogas is being created. When CO2 is extracted from biogas, you\u2019re left with biomethane, which is as useful as gas as fossil gas and can be distributed in the gas distribution network, which many countries have established for the fossil gas.<\/p>\n

When asked about more specific information on the printed tanks for the biogas industry, Lund-Nielsen replied: \u201cThere are a few large suppliers of steel tanks used in the stage of processing the manure. These tanks need to be narrow and tall because if they\u2019re wide, it\u2019s difficult to turn the manure around. Because of the height limitations of conventional concrete elements, those tanks are made of expensive steel today, while we can print these taller tanks with more economical concrete. We can also produce wide tanks which are used for pre-treatment and after-treatment phases of manure processing during biogas production.\u201d<\/p>\n

Concrete tanks are a perfect solution for both biogas and water infrastructure purposes since the pressure of the content of the tanks gets very high, and concrete can withstand it easily. This is why large-scale polymer printing can\u2019t stand a chance against concrete in these specific application<\/a>s.<\/p>\n

Apart<\/a> from the mentioned biogas tanks and water infrastructure, COBOD also has its eye on industrial warehouses and bridges, \u201cbecause if you look at industrial warehouses and bridges, they\u2019re also quite raw simple structures of reinforced concrete\u201d, Lund-Nielsen says.<\/p>\n

This clearly shows that Henrik Lund-Nielsen believes that the current best use cases for 3D construction technology are within simpler reinforced concrete shapes since the biggest cost-cutting could be achieved there.<\/p>\n

A look at the 3D construction printing world<\/strong><\/h2>\n

While some European countries like Italy and Spain might be behind when it comes to printed buildings, the US is a much stronger market for such buildings, part<\/a>ly because getting permits is easier than it is in Europe.<\/p>\n

Instead of viewing this as a weakness, COBOD used it as an opportunity to further expand the business. \u201cWe have a regional competence center & office in North America because the US side of the business is so big\u201d, Lund-Nielsen says with a bit of pride, and rightfully so.<\/p>\n

COBOD has achieved significant growth in the last year alone, and sales numbers show it clearly. \u201cWe sold more than 65 printers worldwide, almost 50% of which were sold last year. We are more than 100 people now, we\u2019re profitable, and we\u2019re not venture based. Sales last year was around 16 million Euros.\u201d, Lund-Nielsen said while talking about the recent business results for COBOD.<\/p>\n

It has to be said, these numbers are rather impressive for such a young company operating in what is still such a narrow niche and market overall.<\/p>\n

Maintaining a healthy relationship with shareholders such as Holcim, Cemex and  PERI is crucial for keeping the business alive as these shareholders in COBOD are companies closely tied with the construction sector. In addition, they\u2019re indeed using COBOD\u2019s technology in their operations, which is a seriously good combination for pushing all ventures forward in the sector while establishing a leading position for COBOD and its shareholders.<\/p>\n

The biggest challenge that needed to be solved to enable true cost cuttings was the cost of proprietary mixes of concrete used by different manufacturers of printed buildings, and with the Dfab solution co-developed with Cemex, this was solved in 2021. \u201cIt makes no sense to lower the cost of labor, but then offset it by increased material cost\u201d, Lund-Nielsen explained.<\/p>\n

Currently, there are around 150 printed buildings in the world. That number is expected to double in the next year, which gives a strong indicator as to where the industry is heading.<\/p>\n

Mr. Lund-Nielsen also said that the team at COBOD is doing its best to enable higher buildings to be printed soon. Their printers have printed three-story houses already but plans for higher construction are in the works.<\/p>\n
