However, the most widely used approach has geometric limitations that restrict its <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/insights\/applications\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">application<\/a> to simple shapes like orthogonal walls. \u201cThis leads to high concrete consumption and limits its <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/insights\/applications\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">application<\/a> for lightweight forms that entail intricate shapes like branching and angular tubular forms, overhangs, layer cantilevers, and filament section or angle variations,\u201d said Aghaei Meibodi, assistant professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/architecture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">architecture<\/a> at Taubman College.<\/p>\n<p>The University of Michigan team\u2019s new approach, the \u2018Shell Wall\u2019, demonstrates a computational design and robotic <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/service\/3d-printing-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3D printing<\/a> technology that effectively combines topology optimization with 3DCP. The team created a computational model that synergizes nonplanar and variable material deposition based on the shape and geometric features of the topology-optimized p<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">art<\/a>s.
