{"id":192746,"date":"2022-10-28T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-10-28T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/ansto-collaborates-with-3rd-axis-to-recycle-ppe-into-feedstock-sustainability\/"},"modified":"2022-10-28T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2022-10-28T00:00:00","slug":"ansto-collaborates-with-3rd-axis-to-recycle-ppe-into-feedstock-sustainability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/ansto-collaborates-with-3rd-axis-to-recycle-ppe-into-feedstock-sustainability\/","title":{"rendered":"ANSTO collaborates with 3RD Axis to recycle PPE into feedstock Sustainability"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Australia\u2019s Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) is collaborating with the additive manufacturing company, 3RD Axis, on the design, materials, and process development of a key ceramic component for an innovative process to convert plastic waste from personal protective equipment (PPE), such as face masks and gowns, into feedstock for <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/service\/3d-printing-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3D printing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The goal of the project is to use raw materials in discarded or out-of-date PPE, such as masks and sterile wraps, as feedstock to produce polymer filament for digital 3D printers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is normal now for all of us to wear PPE in our everyday lives, which provides protection from airborne contaminants, but it also creates the problem of increased waste and landfill,\u201d said Ashish Jain, Director of 3RD Axis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are excited to be sharing ANSTO expertise and capabilities in materials development and characterization to support this promising solution to recycle waste and produce a consumable product in great demand in additive manufacturing,\u201d said Dr. Robert Acres, Commercial Technical Consultant for ANSTO.<\/p>\n<p>3rd Axis, a member of ANSTO\u2019s Innovation Center, nandin, was awarded two NSW grants to progress the technology. A subsequent SBIR grant was awarded this month.<\/p>\n<p>ANSTO worked on the feasibility stage of the project following the awarding of the first grant and completed initial material characterization to validate the waste separation process, which will provide the raw material the extruder will use to make filaments.<\/p>\n<p>The technology had to provide clean, separate core element materials from the PPE feedstock.<\/p>\n<p>This ceramic screw plastic extrusion machine has been provisionally patented by 3rd Axis. The unique design of the ceramic extruder makes it different from existing steel extruders that require high-wattage heating elements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we are seeking to do is to take these materials out of the single-use economy and transform them into a durable manufactured <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">art<\/a>icle that has a longer life cycle as the next product,\u201d said Andrew Cooper, CEO of 3RD Axis. \u201cWe are using a triple helix approach to research, development, and commercialization of our products, and the SBIR is a great example of Government, Industry, and researchers collaborating to reach a common goal that will provide jobs and opportunity to address a very serious challenge in waste management for the healthcare sector globally,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>3RD Axis is collaborating with <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/medical\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">medical<\/a> waste industry p<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">art<\/a>ners to streamline collection and separation processes that can be used in hospitals, <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/medical\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">medical<\/a> centers, hotels, and emergency services <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/automotive\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vehicle<\/a>s. According to ANSTO, it is estimated that 1.6 million tonnes of plastic waste a day has been generated, globally, since the st<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">art<\/a> of the pandemic outbreak, and 3.4 billion single-use face masks are discarded daily as a result of COVID-19 safety measures.
