The Lotus House will be unveiled as part of Solar Decathlon China 2018 this month.<\/p>\n<p>Solar Decathlon China 2018\u00a0is a\u00a0competition which requires teams to build a single or two-story solar house containing all necessary household appliances. This year\u2019s Solar Decathlon China will be hosted in\u00a0Dezhou.<\/p>\n<p>However, one team from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wustl.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washington University in St. Louis<\/a>\u00a0has captured our attention due to their solar house being made with the help of 3D printers.<\/p>\n<p>The students involved in the project are from the Sam Fox School of Design &amp; Visual Arts and the School of Engineering &amp; Applied Science and received support from the International Center for Energy, Environment, and Sustainability (InCEES).<\/p>\n<p>Their design is called the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/solardecathlon.wustl.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lotus House<\/a>. It\u2019s a 3D printed home which looks like a blossoming flower, with curved overlapping panels making up the exterior. Its interior comprises of a 650-square-foot, single-story home.<\/p>\n<p>Kinga Pabjan, a master\u2019s candidate in architecture and construction management, explains:<em>\u00a0\u201cWe were inspired by the beauty, delicacy and cultural importance of the lotus. But we didn\u2019t start with the lotus. Our initial intention was to use emerging technologies, particularly additive manufacturing, to create organic form. We wanted to challenge the possibilities of 3D printing.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/img.facfox.com\/imgs\/2022\/11\/08\/ab898f1bd1f7fb86.png\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Lotus House is a Non-Orthogonal Design Thanks to 3D Printing<\/h3>\n<p>Although projects for this competition can often take years to create, this team only needed eight months to work on the Lotus House. This is partially thanks to having experience on the\u00a0CRETE House for the 2017 US Solar Decathlon and also because every team member focused on completing a specific task.<\/p>\n<p>They worked with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.additiveeng.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Additive Engineering Solutions<\/a>\u00a0in St. Louis to produce sample wall framework and furniture. Then, in China, they spent five weeks working with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.beilida.com\/about\/i=6&amp;comContentId=6.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Beilidato<\/a>\u00a0to create the walls and roof.<\/p>\n<p>During this time, they also finalized\u00a0electrical systems, floors, HVAC, and insulation. Finally, construction began last month.<\/p>\n<p>This house is the only\u00a0non-orthogonal design but Pabjan adds that this is because corners are \u201cpoorly used\u201d. The circular design will reduce wasted space.<\/p>\n<p>And, of course, this unusual design was made easier with the help of 3D printing.\u00a0However, creating a unique shape wasn\u2019t the only reason for relying on the technology. Additive manufacturing also offers many sustainability benefits.<\/p>\n<p>The team created custom formworks using 3D printing and the results\u00a0served as molds for the concrete side panels. Pabjan explains:\u00a0<em>\u201cA typical wooden formwork can only be reused two or three times before it\u2019s tossed into a landfill. The initial price of a 3D printed mold is higher, but it can be reused a hundred times. 3D printed formworks also create far less waste, use a fraction of the energy and save time, since fabrication can begin as soon as the digital description is created.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>According to the team, just after 10 uses the 3D printed mold paid for itself.<\/p>\n<p>Pabjan adds that as 3D printing becomes more affordable to the construction industry, we\u2019ll begin to see a lot more organic designs.
