The arc605 is a state-of-the-<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">art<\/a>, 5-axis metal 3D printer, developed by Gefertec, a 3D printer manufacturer based in Germany.<\/p>\n<p>According to Albert To, William Kepler Whiteford Professor in the Swanson School of Engineering, and an expert on <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/service\/3d-printing-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3D printing<\/a>, when it comes to producing large, specialized metal p<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">art<\/a>s \u2013 the arc605 is unbeatable. \u201cEven on the order of tens of p<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">art<\/a>s, this is very advantageous,\u201d said Albert To. \u201cAnd if you want to include some complexity, then you can\u2019t do it any other way than <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/service\/3d-printing-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3D printing<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/470067426238203719.jpeg\">  The Gefertec printer in action. Green glass protects viewers from the bright light of the device\u2019s arc welder as it deposits layers of an aluminum alloy.   <\/p>\n<p>The arc605 printer works using Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM), a <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/service\/3d-printing-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3D printing<\/a> process belonging to the Direct Energy Deposition (DED) category of AM processes. This process is notably faster than the previous metal Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LBPF) 3D printers used in the lab \u2013 making the Gefertec printer well-suited for producing larger p<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">art<\/a>s that would traditionally have to be cast and tooled \u2013 a longer, more limited, and more expensive technique when manufacturing small-batches. The printer\u2019s WAAM technology is therefore better-suited for one of Albert To\u2019s first projects \u2013&nbsp;making a three-foot-long bridge joint for the US Army that is no longer manufactured.<\/p>\n<p>However, this technology is not without flaws. For example \u2013 metals warp as they heat and cool. However, the aluminum tends to crack when welded. \u201cYou have to tune all these different parameters to figure out what will produce the best-quality weld,\u201d said Xavier Jimenez. \u201cEvery material behaves a little differently.\u201d The Gefertec arc605 printer was p<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">art<\/a> of the reason he chose the University of Pittsburgh.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/4283785416133318667.jpeg\">  Simple \u2018walls\u2019 of stainless steel welded onto a surface using the new printer.   <\/p>\n<p>Considering that the machine is larger than some studio ap<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">art<\/a>ments \u2013 it had to be dropped into the lab piece-by-piece, via crane, and then assembled once the pieces were inside. \u201cIt was a lot of work to get all the pieces together to get the machine working,\u201d said Xavier Jimenez. \u201cWe\u2019re very happy that it\u2019s here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With the machine installed, the team is now testing parameters for the <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/service\/3d-printing-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3D printing<\/a> of different metals.
