The product is being launched at North America\u2019s largest additive manufacturing conference, the RAPID + TCT Conference.<\/p>\n<p>The software essentially serves as a translator between the commands that would print the p<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">art<\/a> in a perfect world, and how the machine needs to compensate for vibrations in the real world. It works for printers that <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/mechanics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mechanic<\/a>ally move a printhead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you want to reduce vibration in a moving object, most times you can do that by slowing down. But as <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/service\/3d-printing-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3D printing<\/a> is already very slow, that solution creates another problem,\u201d said\u00a0Chinedum Okwudire, U-M associate professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/mechanics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mechanic<\/a>al engineering and founder of\u00a0Ulendo. \u201cOur solution allows you to print fast without sacrificing quality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a result, printers could double their speed without consuming much more <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">energy<\/a>, potentially reducing the cost per printed p<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">art<\/a> as well.<\/p>\n<p>The Ulendo software is called FBS, which stands for Filtered B Splines. That technical name refers to the mathematical function Okwudire\u2019s team used to translate the machine commands from the ideal expectation to commands that would compensate for vibration in the 3D printer.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/3075978451779983573.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Molong Duon and Deokkyun Yoon, both <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/mechanics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mechanic<\/a>al engineering PhD students, and Chinedum Okwudire, associate professor in <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/mechanics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mechanic<\/a>al engineering, have developed what they call \u201cfiltered b-spline\u201d algorithms to speed up <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/consumer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">consumer<\/a> 3-D printers without sacrificing quality. Desktop 3D printers often use light and flexible p<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">art<\/a>s to save costs and stay affordable, but this allows for unwanted flexing and vibrations when the movement of the printhead is accelerated. These vibrations can offset the printhead, and because the printer uses a stepper motor, it won\u2019t know there is a problem and will keep printing, resulting in an incredibly deformed final product. His team couldn\u2019t stiffen the machine to prevent vibrations, so they were forced to slow it down.<\/p>\n<p>Beginning at U-M as a professor in 2011, Okwudire had the freedom to design software that could overcome machine vibrations. Then in 2017, a <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/mechanics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mechanic<\/a>al engineering graduate student from Okwudire\u2019s lab implemented the software on a 3D printer.<\/p>\n<p>When the research was highlighted with a\u00a0YouTube video, commenters made the market for the solution apparent, and Ulendo was born through Innovation P<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">art<\/a>nerships at U-M. Much of the commercial development was funded through an MTRAC grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and a Small Business Innovation Research grant from the National Science Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMembers of the <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/service\/3d-printing-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3D printing<\/a> industry have the same jaw-dropping reaction I had when I first heard about how this technology results in a printer operating at two times the speed and 10 times the acceleration,\u201d said Ulendo CEO Brenda Jones.<\/p>\n<p>Okwudire and his team will work on expanding the algorithm to other kinds of machines, including robots, machine tools, and more types of 3D printers.
