After which, <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/medical\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">medical<\/a> experts at the University of Florida (USF) used <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/service\/3d-printing-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3D printing<\/a> technology from Formlabs, both to print a pre-operative surgical guide and a prosthetic casque.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.facfox.com\/imgs\/2022\/06\/17\/7d71672ca2d5f4c2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"466\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">A 3D scan of Crescent\u2019s head<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In preparation for the hornbills surgery, the USF radiology team used CT scans to 3D print a surgical guide for the procedure. 3D printed surgical guides enable accurate, personalized modeling of humans, and now birds, anatomy much faster than conventional methods, and are increasingly used in hospitals, and now avian veterinary practices, around the world. When USF Health reached out to Formlabs for advice \u2013 Formlabs donated their new, in-development, BioMed White resin material, which fit the criteria.<\/p>\n<p>BioMed White was shown for the first time, along with BioMed Black, at the 2021 Radiological Society of North America conference. At the time, Formlabs said the addition of the resins to its materials library would allow for greater flexibility in design and function and could be used in a variety of <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/insights\/applications\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">application<\/a>s ranging from <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/medical\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">medical<\/a> devices to <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/consumer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">consumer<\/a> goods, and apparently, birds.<\/p>\n<p>After removing the tumor, the surgeons adhered the 3D printed casque to the hornbills beak using <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/dental\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dental<\/a> acrylic and titanium screws.
