This prototype lunar floor design section was <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/service\/3d-printing-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3D print<\/a>ed in stainless steel by Dutch company MX3D, known for creating a metal <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/service\/3d-printing-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3D print<\/a>ed bridge in Amsterdam using internally developed large format, robotic WAAM technology<\/p>\n<p>Designed to meet efficiency, use, and construction constraints, the structure\u2019s smooth web pattern design emerged from delineating stress map analysis and optimizing a continuous topology to reduce mass and make maximum use of <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/service\/3d-printing-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3D print<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/service\/3d-printing-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ing<\/a> manufacturing methods.<\/p>\n<p>It was printed MX3D\u2019s using robotic wire arc additive manufacturing out of 308LSi stainless steel and took about 246 hours to make, adding up to a total mass of approximately 395 kg.<\/p>\n<p>The overall floor design is made out of six separate segments that were printed vertically before being welded together. The cross-section and thickness were also analyzed and differentiated to reduce the overall mass \u2013 with reduced thickness at the exterior\/interior boundaries.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.facfox.com\/imgs\/2021\/09\/68702fb7a77da42b.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"765\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The MX3D team with their first commercial 3D printer, the M1.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThis was a great opportunity to show the potential of our technology for the fabrication of lightweight metal structures together with ESA and SOM,\u201d explained Gijs van der Velden, CEO of MX3D. \u201cIt was a perfect project for MX3D to leverage its experience in printing topology optimized metal structures. Achieving an optimal use of the material is a company goal at MX3D because \u2013 just as when designing space <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/insights\/applications\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">application<\/a>s \u2013 every reduced kilo in an MX3D design is a direct win for a project\u2019s feasibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Advenit Makaya, Advanced Manufacturing Engineer at ESA added: \u201cThis is a remarkable achievement from MX3D, which further highlights the potential of this additive manufacturing technique for an increasing range of space <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/insights\/applications\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">application<\/a>s. The design flexibility and the possibility to combine the printed structure with embedded monitoring systems \u2013 as demonstrated in the <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/service\/3d-printing-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3D print<\/a>ed bridge in Amsterdam \u2013 are worth investigating for <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/insights\/applications\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">application<\/a>s in space structures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis technique could also be considered for in-situ construction of infrastructure during sustainable exploration missions, for instance by using metallic feedstock derived from the locally available regolith.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Rohr, Head of the Materials and Processes team at ESA concluded: \u201cThe capabilities of MX3D demonstrate inspiring concurrence of engineering and <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">art<\/a>, and are another great example to what extent additive manufacturing has already entered our society.
