General Motors is opening a 15,000-square-foot Additive Industrialization Center, a ground-up facility exclusively dedicated to productionizing<\/em> 3D print<\/a>ing<\/a> technology in the automotive<\/a> industry. The AIC is the capstone of GM\u2019s expertise and increased investment in 3D print<\/a>ing<\/a> over the last several years.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe core component of GM\u2019s transformation is becoming a more agile, innovative company, and 3D print<\/a>ing<\/a> will play a critical role in that mission,\u201d said Audley Brown, GM director of Additive Design and Materials Engineering. \u201cCompared to traditional processes, 3D print<\/a>ing<\/a> can produce part<\/a>s in a matter of days versus weeks or months at a significantly lower cost.\u201d<\/p>\n

Overall GM\u2019s AM depart<\/a>ments today have as many as 75 AM systems installed. The comprehensive AIC facility includes 24 3D print<\/a>ers, for both polymer and metal solutions. GM\u2019s additive design and manufacturing team leverage a number of processes at the AIC, including selective laser sintering, selective laser melting, Multi-Jet Fusion and fused deposition modeling.<\/p>\n

The AIC is intended to validate additive technologies and application<\/a>s, with frequent pivots to evolving additive machinery and equipment. GM Ventures and GM R&D are collaborative part<\/a>ners with the AIC, supporting a holistic, integrated, enterprise approach to adopting accelerated product development and tooling.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, GM shared how 3D print<\/a>ing<\/a> played a critical role in the company\u2019s transition from making vehicle<\/a>s to medical<\/a> devices in a matter of days, and how 3D-printed part<\/a>s support rigorous motorsports competitions. These same processes are also transforming the company\u2019s operations.<\/p>\n

\u201cGM is increasingly applying the benefits of 3D print<\/a>ing<\/a>, from prototype development to manufacturing tooling and production vehicle<\/a>s,\u201d said Ron Daul, GM director of Additive Manufacturing and Polymer Centers. \u201cWith the opening of the AIC, we\u2019ll continue to accelerate the adoption of this technology across the organization.\u201d<\/p>\n

From functional prototypes\u2026<\/h2>\n

GM has a history of using 3D-printed rapid prototypes to check form and fit. Today, many of the part<\/a>s the AIC produces are functional prototypes used on pre-production vehicle<\/a>s in various testing environment<\/a>s. Early integration vehicle<\/a>s and test benches are often equipped with 3D print<\/a>ed part<\/a>s that can undergo the same testing as a conventionally tooled part<\/a>.<\/p>\n

3D print<\/a>ing<\/a> functional prototypes can help eliminate expensive early tooling costs. As a result, engineers can iterate quickly, make design changes and reduce development times. For example, the team 3D print<\/a>ed the brake cooling ducts used for the development of the Chevrolet Corvette. The 3D print<\/a>ed ducts saved nine weeks of development and reduced costs by over 60 percent in the process.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany recent product programs have benefitted from 3D-printed prototype part<\/a>s in one way or another,\u201d said Brown. \u201cNot only can these part<\/a>s save time and money, but the team also uses 3D print<\/a>ed application<\/a>s during product development to overcome unexpected challenges in real-time.\u201d<\/p>\n

To manufacturing and tooling<\/h2>\n

GM is also producing a significant number of 3D-printed tools used for assembling vehicle<\/a>s. Manufacturing tooling comes in many shapes and forms, such as hand-apply tools, automation components and rapid-response solutions for production site launches.<\/p>\n

3D print<\/a>ing<\/a> often enables the team to consolidate the components of a part<\/a> into a single, optimized design. The result is tools that are lighter, more ergonomic and less complex.<\/p>\n

For the launch of GM\u2019s all-new full-size SUVs, the team 3D print<\/a>ed nearly 100 hand tools for the body shop at Arlington Assembly. Typically, these tools would be made of aluminum, weighing anywhere from 10 to 40 pounds. The new designs, constructed with a nylon carbon fiber composite, weigh as little as three pounds and virtually eliminated the lead time for ordering part<\/a> changes.<\/p>\n

\u201c3D print<\/a>ing<\/a> the body shop tools at Arlington saved more than two months in tooling construction,\u201d said Daul. \u201cThis is at a critical time when we are changing the plant over to launch the new models. Ultimately, 3D print<\/a>ing<\/a> helps accelerate new vehicle<\/a> launches like our full-size SUVs.\u201d<\/p>\n

The V-Series Blackwing models will be the first GM production vehicles with 3D-printed parts, including a unique medallion on the manual shifter knob.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

With the AIC, GM is making its 3D-printing capability more sophisticated and responsive across its global manufacturing facilities.<\/p>\n

And production<\/h2>\n

Cadillac recently announced the CT4-V Blackwing and CT5-V Blackwing will be the first GM production vehicle<\/a>s to have 3D-printed part<\/a>s, including an emblem on the manual shifter knob, an electrical harness bracket and two HVAC ducts.<\/p>\n

By leveraging additive manufacturing, the Cadillac team was also able to reduce costs and increase efficiency when developing the high-performance sedans\u2019 manual transmission.<\/p>\n
