The structure was launched into space recently, aboard a Soyuz rocket, and has been installed on the ISS\u2019 Russian Zvezda module.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/facfox-upload.oss-us-east-1.aliyuncs.com\/image\/2020\/11\/ZjaqMb.jpg\" \/> The International Space Station (ISS)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith an orbit of about 90 minutes, Mini-EUSO records all space and atmospheric objects and events within sight, including UV emissions from night-earth, transient luminous events, meteors, space debris and more,\u201d said Marco Ricci, Lead Researcher at Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati INFN and INFN Country Manager for Collaboration EUSO SPB2 Italia. \u201cThe final scientific objective is to produce a high-resolution map of the Earth in the UV range (300-400 nm), which is expected to significantly advance research on cosmic rays, but also serve as an important experiment for future space missions.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Robust 3D printing<\/h2>\n<p>While interesting on the whole, a particular aspect of the project is most interesting to us: ASI and its partners utilized <a href=\"\/service\/3d-printing-service\/\">3D printing<\/a> to produce parts for the telescope, and the manufacturing technology was reportedly a pivotal part of the project\u2019s success, helping to reduce costs substantially (by a factor of ten) and speeding up development time by about a year.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/facfox-upload.oss-us-east-1.aliyuncs.com\/image\/2020\/11\/YjqiAf.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<div style=\"background-color: #eaeaea7a; padding: 15px 30px; overflow-wrap: break-word; display: flex; align-items: center; border-radius: 4px; box-shadow: -1px 4px 20px 0px #dedede; margin-top: 1em; margin-bottom: 1em;\">\n<div style=\"flex: 1; padding-right: 30px;\">\n<h4 style=\"margin-bottom: 14px;\">Manufacturing on Demand<\/h4>\n<div style=\"display: block;\">Maximize the freedom of your product design, get your ideal realized with 3D printing and other cutting-edge technologies!<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><a style=\"background-color: #0baee8; color: white; padding: 10px 20px; border-radius: 4px;\" href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i class=\"fa-fw auxicon auxicon-cloud-upload\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i> Get Quote<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Parts were 3D printed using Stratasys\u2018 Fortus 450mc 3D printer and ULTEM 9085 material at the INFN\u2019s \u00a0Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati. The combination of these two products enabled the research team to produce parts that met the stringent requirements of the <a href=\"\/news\/topics\/aerospace\">aerospace sector<\/a> and the ISS. The parts also had to be able to withstand the mechanical stresses and vibrations of a rocket launch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe explored numerous ways in which we could achieve the expected performance while meeting material certification,\u201d explained Tommaso Napolitano, Head of Mechanics Design and Construction Department at INFN, Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati. \u201cWe even built a full prototype in aluminum, one of the most commonplace materials for aerospace. But the results were far from expectation \u2013 the structure was too heavy and it did not provide the insulation required for the interior electrical currents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/facfox-upload.oss-us-east-1.aliyuncs.com\/image\/2020\/11\/bYfqey.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a result, we turned to our Fortus 450mc 3D Printer and found that the ULTEM 9085 resin offered the perfect alternative. Not only is the material extremely durable, but it\u2019s lightweight,\u201d he continued. \u201cAnd crucially, it also offers exceptional insulation properties, as well as high chemical and thermal resistance. It\u2019s fair to say that without the capability to print the Mini-EUSO structure in this material, we would not have met the ISS\u2019 safety and weight restrictions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Data captured by the Mini-EUSO telescope has already been transmitted back to Earth and is being analyzed by a team. The equipment is part of a broader international program that seeks to investigate and study the origin and nature of ultra-high energy cosmic rays from space.
