The pistons are being manufactured in collaboration with Porsche p<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">art<\/a>ners Mahle and Trumpf.<\/p>\n<p>Up until recently, Porsche has primarily relied on additive manufacturing for the production of prototypes and spare p<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">art<\/a>s for classic sports cars. Now, the company is showcasing its belief in the technology\u2019s potential by <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/service\/3d-printing-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/service\/3d-printing-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">3D print<\/a>ing<\/a> end-use piston components for its 911 flagship model. AM has enabled Porsche to redesign the pistons for optimized load handling, which has in turn resulted in a more lightweight component. Specifically, the <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/service\/3d-printing-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">3D print<\/a>ed pistons are 10% lighter than the forged series production pistons. The updated pistons also integrate a closed cooling duct in their crown \u2013 a geometry only achievable using <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/service\/3d-printing-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/service\/3d-printing-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">3D print<\/a>ing<\/a>. All these improvements have resulted in a higher performing and more efficient p<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">art<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/facfox-upload.oss-us-east-1.aliyuncs.com\/image\/2020\/11\/vYNbYn.jpeg\"><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThanks to the new, lighter pistons, we can increase the engine speed, lower the temperature load on the pistons and optimise combustion,\u201d said Frank Ickinger, who works in the advance drive development dep<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">art<\/a>ment at Porsche. \u201cThis makes it possible to get up to 30 PS more power from the 700 PS biturbo engine, while at the same time improving efficiency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/service\/3d-printing-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">3D print<\/a>ed pistons were manufactured using a laser metal fusion process and a high-purity metal powder. As stated, Porsche worked closely with German <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/automotive\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">automotive<\/a> p<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">art<\/a>s manufacturer Mahle and industrial machine manufacturing company Trumpf for the p<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">art<\/a>s\u2019 production. The seat, which is customizable in terms of firmness level, integrates several <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/service\/3d-printing-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">3D print<\/a>ed components, including the cushion and backrest surfaces.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe seat is the interface between the human and the <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/automotive\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vehicle<\/a>, and is thus important for precise, sporty handling,\u201d said Michael Steiner, Member of the Executive Board for Research and Development at Porsche. \u201cThat\u2019s why personalised seat shells customised for the driver have been standard in race cars for a long time now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/facfox-upload.oss-us-east-1.aliyuncs.com\/image\/2020\/11\/aqYFV3.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>The innovative seat design is based on a sandwich construction concept, which is made up of a base support made of expanded polypropylene (EPP) and the customizable comfort layer, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/service\/3d-printing-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">3D print<\/a>ed from polyurethane-based materials and achieves its tuneable firmness thanks to a lattice structure. The seat\u2019s outer skin is made from Racetex and has a perforation pattern that encourages climate control.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Porsche is also known for using AM for the production of spare p<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/news\/topics\/art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">art<\/a>s that are no longer available for vintage car models. For instance, the company is now producing the release lever for the Porsche 959 clutch using <a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/service\/3d-printing-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/service\/3d-printing-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">3D print<\/a>ing<\/a>.
