Spanish sports car brand CUPRA is seeing the benefits of adopting 3D print<\/a>ing<\/a> on the racetrack. The company, which has integrated 3D print<\/a>ed components made using HP\u2019s Multi Jet Fusion technology into its new CUPRA Leon Competici\u00f3n vehicle<\/a>, has reported greater efficiency in its production process thanks to AM. <\/span><\/p>\n

The motorsport industry is proving to be a keen adopter of additive manufacturing technologies. Across the board, racing teams and automotive<\/a> brands are using the technology to accelerate part<\/a> development and on-demand production. In CUPRA\u2019s case, the company has turned to HP\u2019s MJF<\/a> technology to produce a number of part<\/a>s for its new race-car model, including a door mirror, air intakes, cooling intakes and the steering wheel\u2019s center control module.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The automotive<\/a> company teamed up with HP to exploit the benefits of its Jet Fusion 5200 3D print<\/a>ing<\/a> solution for the CUPRA Leon Competici\u00f3n vehicle<\/a>, which was unveiled this week at the inauguration of the CUPRA Garage. According to the company, 3D print<\/a>ing<\/a> has enabled it to achieve greater agility, efficiency and flexibility in its car production.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe main goal is to have a lot of part<\/a>s in a short time,\u201d said Xavi Serra, the Head of technical development at CUPRA Racing. \u201cWe can quickly test a wide variety of designs and furthermore, since vehicle<\/a> development is now done in parallel, this technology enables us to react swiftly to any changes in the design process.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Virginia Palacios, Head of Systems Product Management, 3D Printing & Digital Manufacturing, HP Inc., added: \u201cThe work with CUPRA demonstrates the power of 3D print<\/a>ing<\/a> and digital manufacturing\u2014changing the way the world designs and manufactures.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

3D print<\/a>ing<\/a> enabled the CUPRA team to redesign a traditional car door mirror, adding extra functionality while still meeting TCR competition guidelines, which stipulate that the door mirror must have the same shape as the production car.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe wanted to add an additional function, which is to cool the driver,\u201d Serra explained. \u201cWe therefore had to design an air intake in the maximum pressure zone to achieve this effect.\u201d The redesigned 3D print<\/a>ed components were then tested in a wind tunnel, the same way traditionally manufactured part<\/a>s are.<\/span><\/p>\n

After a successful run in the wind tunnel, the most 3D print<\/a>ed component designs were tested on the track. The innovative Leon Competici\u00f3n was put to the test recently at the Portimao track in Portulgal. According to Serra, the results were \u201cexcellent.\u201d All the 3D print<\/a>ed part<\/a>s withstood the loads and environment<\/a>al conditions they were exposed to.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c3D print<\/a>ing<\/a> is going to signal a turning point in the automotive<\/a> industry by accelerating lead times and HP 3D technology is helping designers create part<\/a>s that could not be produced with other technologies,\u201d concluded Palacios. \u201cThis technology is and will continue to be key in countless fields to make the most complex ideas a reality.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n
