It&#8217;s as simple as affixing a USB car charger to the battery. After Hurricane Sandy, Betty Stern was without power and used an inverter\/battery setup at home, but it was huge and heavy. This project revisits the concept with a smaller battery (meant for motorcycles\/ATVs) and DC-only charging.<\/p>\n<p>She also created an optional 3D printed battery topper to cover the battery contacts and hold the USB ports. The <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tinkercad.com\/things\/5ASHbYY86ig-emergency-usb-power-source\">design is available on Tinkercad<\/a> so that you may modify it to fit your specific battery and USB charger.<\/p>\n<p>The compact design makes it easier to transport and store. There are many situations where this device could be useful:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Power outage<\/li>\n<li>Camping<\/li>\n<li>Off-grid living<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"supplies-heading\">Supplies:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>12V vehicle battery (I used one intended for a motorcycle\/ATV) such as <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2ptAJVH\">this one<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/33WRsja\">USB car charger with on\/off switch<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/33WRsja\"><\/a>3D printer (I have a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2CVQHLm\">Creality CR-10s Pro<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/342cT2g\">3D filament<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Ruler and\/or <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2KykpKS\">Calipers<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Battery charger to fill up between uses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In an emergency, you can use what you have. Those 7Ah AGM batteries used in UPS&#8217;s, emergency lighting, kids ride on toys, etc., are more common and are also good choices.<\/p>\n<p>To cut down on the weight while raising durability and capacity, perhaps we can use 18650 lithium cells. These have their own challenges, but the energy density is quite high. Used lithium cells (18650s) may be harvested from older laptops, power tools, wrecked Teslas, or other e-waste. The red wire connects to the positive terminal, and the black wire connects to the negative terminal. My charger also has a fuse. The USB charger can be used like this without the need for any 3D printed parts. It can be installed in a motorcycle dashboard or tucked away with your other emergency supplies.<\/p>\n<p>The 8Ah battery at 12V gives me 96 Watt-hours. Divided by my phones 11.2 Watt-hours and factoring in a 90% efficiency of the USB charger, I can get about seven and a half-full phone charges from this battery, or half that if I want to still use it to start a vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>Formula:<\/p>\n<p>(8Ah * 12V) battery \/ (11.2Wh phone \/ .9 charger efficiency) = 7.7 charges to depletion<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"step-title\">Step 2: Measure and build the 3D model<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-103083 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/FXT6PFDK34G80AK.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"808\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Use a ruler and\/or calipers to measure your battery and USB charger and adjust <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tinkercad.com\/things\/5ASHbYY86ig-emergency-usb-power-source\">the Tinkercad model<\/a> to fit its dimensions with some tolerance (about half a millimeter of extra space should do), if needed. Definitely double-check the measurements of your components before printing\u2014I used an old battery that I can&#8217;t find online and so yours is bound to be a little different.<\/p>\n<p>My battery dimensions: 151.33mm wide x 84.40mm deep x 106.00mm tall<\/p>\n<p>My USB charger dimensions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>27.23mm diameter of the threaded stem<\/li>\n<li>37.36mm nut outer diameter<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"step-title\">Step 3: 3D Print the housing<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-103082 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/FE0N7R7K39BDX9M.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"872\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-103081 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/FH84J8UK3E6R25D.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-103080\" src=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/F92YP74K3E6R25E.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-103079 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/FFGKU98K3E6R25F.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After downloading the STL file from Tinkercad, I used Cura software to prepare the model for printing. I flipped it upside down so it will print its flat surface first. Here are my print settings:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Layer height: .2mm<\/li>\n<li>Wall thickness: .8mm<\/li>\n<li>Wall Line Count: 2<\/li>\n<li>Infill density: 30%<\/li>\n<li>No support<\/li>\n<li>Printed using <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2QFPqQX\">3D Solutech 1.75mm PLA filament in teal blue<\/a> on my <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2NXOzJl\">Creality CR-10s Pro printer<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Print time: 7 hours<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"step-title\">Step 4: Try to use your power source!<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-103078 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/F2EWMBTK3E6R25K.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-103077 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/F3U6MS0K3E6R25G.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-103076 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/FMWF6UHK3E6TBKW.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Unplug the USB charger and install it into the hole on the 3D printed topper using its included nut. Wire up the circuit (red to + and black to -) and set the topper on battery.
