Microscopic gaps are formed between side by side layers and where the extruder reverses direction.<\/p>\n<p>Pic 1 shows a typical print using normal settings and pic 2 shows a print with fused layers.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-101546 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/FHRZ7ORJFX0K201.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-101545 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/FKN7VRBJFX0K3QG.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Minimum Wall Thickness<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The minimum thickness that containers should be designed with is .068 inches. This will result in at least 3 extrusions side by side in a vertical wall. I have had very good results using the free Mattercontrol slicer to slice prints for a Makerbot Replicator 2. You may have to make some adjustments of the settings for other 3D printers.<\/p>\n<p>Other slicer programs can be used, but the settings will have to transferred over, which can be difficult as different programs use slightly different terminology for the settings.<\/p>\n<p>In order to get prints that are waterproof and air-tight, the slicer settings have to be adjusted to over-extrude the filament. Most extruders are designed to do a clean print as fast as possible. In order to over-extrude, the print speed has to be slowed down and the extrusion multiplier increased. This allows for the extrusion to be wider and overlap side by side layers. twice as fast extrusion speeds as detailed here can be used, and they will seal, but they tend to result in less smooth prints.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the essential settings used, all other settings are left at default:<\/p>\n<h3><strong>GENERAL<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>layers\/surface<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Layer height: .2mm<\/li>\n<li>First layer height: .25mm<\/li>\n<li>Perimeters: 2<\/li>\n<li>Avoid crossing perimeters: X<\/li>\n<li>Eternal Perimeters first: X<\/li>\n<li>Start-end overlap: 140%<\/li>\n<li>Merge overlapping lines: X<\/li>\n<li>Expand thin walls: X<\/li>\n<li>Top solid layers: 9<\/li>\n<li>Bottom solid layers: 9<\/li>\n<li>Infill Fill density: 100%<\/li>\n<li>Infill type: lines<\/li>\n<li>Starting angle: 0<\/li>\n<li>Infill overlap: .9mm<\/li>\n<li>Fill thin gaps: X<\/li>\n<li>Speed infill: 20mm\/s<\/li>\n<li>Top solid infill: 20mm\/s<\/li>\n<li>Raft: 100%<\/li>\n<li>Inside perimeters: 20mm\/s<\/li>\n<li>Outside perimeters: 20mm\/s<\/li>\n<li>Support material: 20mm\/s<\/li>\n<li>Bridges: 25mm\/s<\/li>\n<li>Travel: 130mm\/s<\/li>\n<li>First layer speed: 20mm\/s<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>FILAMENT<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Material Diameter: 1.75mm<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Temperatures<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Extruder temperature: 233 Deg C<\/li>\n<li>Extruder wipe temp: 0 Deg C<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Retraction<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Speed: 70mm\/s<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Extrusion<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Extrusion multiplier: 1.5<\/li>\n<li>First layer: 160%<\/li>\n<li>Outside perimeters: 160%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>PRINTER<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Set for your particular printer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"step4\" class=\"step\" data-stepid=\"SHNMBBSJFX0KSGV\">\n<h2 class=\"step-title\">Step 4: Making Food Safe Containers<\/h2>\n<div class=\"mediaset\">\n<div class=\"photoset-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"photoset\">\n<div class=\"photoset-row items-1 \">\n<div class=\"photoset-item photoset-cell\" data-imagenotes=\"[]\">\n<div class=\"photoset-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-101542 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/FW5KNG8JFX0KSOB.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"step-body\">\n<p><strong>Bacteria<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Normal 3D prints are fairly porous leaving lots of micro spaces for food and bacteria to accumulate. Printing as described here will result in solid prints that are easier to clean and less friendly to bacteria.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Food Safe Filaments<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For storage or measurement of dry foods, most PLA printing filaments can probably be used without problems. For holding liquids, more should be done. Many filaments have proprietary chemical additives to make them more flexible or give better extrusion characteristics. They could be somewhat toxic. Some of the additives used to create colors can also be somewhat toxic. To be completely safe, filaments rated food safe should be used.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Clean Extruders<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Most filaments leave residues in the extruder as can be seen in prints after changing to a different filament. Residues from previous filaments can end up being extruded even with fresh filaments. To be completely food-safe, new extruders should probably be used that have only run food-safe filaments.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Best Nozzle<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Many Brass nozzles are alloys that can include lead which could leach out and should be avoided when making objects that will be in contact with food&#8211;especially liquids. The slicer settings are somewhat different. Pic 2 shows an experimental ant robot that uses ninja-flex filament.
