It\u2019s tough, resistant to heat and chemicals, and ideal for 3D printing, provided you follow some guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>PC is one of the world\u2019s most popular plastics, and because it\u2019s highly recyclable, it\u2019s more popular than ever, used in engineering, consumer products, and manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p>Its transparent nature, coupled with its durability, makes it ideal for 3D printed prototypes when you really want to\u00a0<em>see<\/em>\u00a0how parts fit together and for molds so you can inspect the quality. Naturally, it\u2019s the go-to material for 3D printed lighting fixtures.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>PC isn\u2019t just clear, of course. It can take on colors and remain translucent or completely opaque. It\u2019s also mixed with other plastics to boost impact resistance. For example, PC-ABS, which comes in black and white, is used for products, such as drone bodies and replacement parts that need more strength than ABS alone. You\u2019ll also find PC with additives, including carbon fibers.<\/p>\n<p>To print successfully with PC you\u2019ll need a machine that can handle it. (Source: Covestro)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Although you\u2019ll find clear filament,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/all3dp.com\/1\/3d-printer-filament-types-3d-printing-3d-filament\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">polycarbonate (PC) filament<\/a>\u00a0printing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rigid.ink\/pages\/filament-comparison-guide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">differs from PLA and other filaments<\/a>\u00a0in several ways. This affects not only the properties of prints, but what you must do to achieve success.<\/p>\n<p>PC is more durable and flexible than PLA but less so than nylon. It\u2019s harder than ABS, PLA, or PMMA, while also being lighter and less dense than ABS. Its ability to withstand torsional stress is superior to other thermoplastics, and it\u2019s flexible enough to be machine bendable at room temperature.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PC is:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>heat resistant up to 135 \u00b0C (for reference, PLA can begin to deform around 60 \u00b0C)<\/li>\n<li>highly durable<\/li>\n<li>impact and shatter resistant<\/li>\n<li>moderately flexible<\/li>\n<li>transparent<\/li>\n<li>electrically non-conductive<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>PC\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/all3dp.com\/2\/polycarbonate-pc-filament-explained-and-compared\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0properties<\/a>\u00a0make it a bit more difficult to work with. The material is prone to warping and shrinkage during printing, so a consistent temperature must be maintained. Layers may not adhere to the bed or may separate or crack as the material cools and warps if not kept hot.<\/p>\n<p>This makes a heated bed essential, and an enclosed chamber is highly recommended. The bed should ideally be between 135 \u00b0C and 150 \u00b0C.<\/p>\n<p>There are third-party adhesives you can try that claim to be useful for maintaining bed adhesion for PC. Sometimes, layers may not adhere, separating or cracking as the material cools and warps. If your preferred printer doesn\u2019t have an enclosure, you may get by with an after-market solution or even a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/all3dp.com\/2\/3d-printer-enclosure-5-cheap-diy-options\/\">DIY enclosure<\/a>\u00a0option.<\/p>\n<p>Similar to ABS, PC filament prints poorly if there\u2019s airflow, which usually causes brittle prints. This is another argument for an enclosure and having the part-cooling feature turned off.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Hot Nozzle Required<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>PC requires a really hot, hot end, one that will ideally get to between 290 \u00b0C and 300 \u00b0C. If your printer doesn\u2019t have a material setting for PC, you may need to tune it manually. If so, be sure to set your retraction settings to distances of no more than 10 mm to prevent jamming. Also note that PC generates strong fumes and odors. This is another reason why it\u2019s usually best to print PC enclosed with a HEPA filter and a well-ventilated area.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>PC Filament Absorbs Moisture<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>PC absorbs atmospheric moisture, so keep it sealed when not in use (in a sealed container or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/all3dp.com\/1\/best-filament-drying-storage-cabinets\/\">moisture-controlled drying unit<\/a>) and buy quality filament to avoid bubbles in your extruder and failed prints. Moisture will not only affect the integrity of the print but also prevent it from being optically transparent.<\/p>\n<p>The recommended 3D printers below all come with an enclosed filament bay and built-in or optional filament storage.
