For this week\u2019s filament we took a new spool of Ninjatek\u2019s\u00a0<span class=\"link\" data-action=\"modal-open\" data-modal-ajax=\"\/en\/product-overlay\/97036\/limit\/0\/\">Armadillo<\/span>\u00a0Polyurethane filament and started printing.<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"listicle-header__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"listicle-header__content\">\n<h3 class=\"headline headline--xxl\">What\u2018s Special?<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"listicle-header__image\">\n<div class=\"image image--center image--rounded image--loaded\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/img.facfox.com\/imgs\/2022\/07\/04\/3dfb0614958883ca.png\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The US-based filament brand NinjaTek is well known and respected in the 3D printing community. Parent company Fenner Drives concentrates on high-performance and specialty materials for industrial and consumer use.<\/p>\n<p>Their flagship filament is\u00a0<span class=\"link\" data-action=\"modal-open\" data-modal-ajax=\"\/en\/product-overlay\/97028\/limit\/0\/\">NinjaFlex<\/span>, specialists in flexible filaments with excellent 3D printing properties. NinjaTek also produces materials with special properties \u2014 like the\u00a0industrial-grade flexible\u00a0<span class=\"link\" data-action=\"modal-open\" data-modal-ajax=\"\/en\/product-overlay\/97032\/limit\/0\/\">Cheetah<\/span>\u00a0and the sturdy, inflexible\u00a0<span class=\"link\" data-action=\"modal-open\" data-modal-ajax=\"\/en\/product-overlay\/97036\/limit\/0\/\">Armadillo<\/span>, which we review here.<\/p>\n<p>NinjaTek\u2019s Armadillo is made from a Polyurethane derivate. These plastics are mostly used whenever you need things to get tough. It can be found in foam insulation panels, hoses, wheels and tires from roller coasters, escalators, shopping carts, elevators and even skateboard wheels. Also, these plastics are used in electrical potting compounds and in synthetic fibers (e.g., Spandex).<\/p>\n<p>Armadillo is available in 1.75 and 3-millimeter diameters, and comes on 0.5, 1, or 2 kilogram spools.<\/p>\n<p>Available Colors are red (\u201cFire\u201d), orange (\u201cLava\u201d), green (\u201cGrass\u201d), dark blue (\u201cSapphire\u201d), white (\u201cSnow\u201d), clear (\u201cWater\u201d) and black (\u201cMidnight\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>The price for a 0.5 kg spool is around $48.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h3 class=\"headline headline--xxl\">The Verdict<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>We tested NinjaTek Armadillo filament on a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/all3dp.com\/1\/lulzbolz-taz-6-3d-printer-review\/\">Lulzbot TAZ 6<\/a>.\u00a0Our spool came in a recycled cardboard box. The content of the spool was covered with plastic foil to prevent it from absorbing moisture.<\/p>\n<p>TPU is notoriously hard to print and needs some extra tender loving care \u2014 we have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/all3dp.com\/2\/tpu-filament-explained-and-compared\/\">some additional tips here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With the recommended settings from the Ninjatek website, our\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.3dbenchy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Benchy<\/a>\u00a0test print turned out only \u201cokay\u201d. You can clearly see some stringing inside the cabin.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/img.facfox.com\/imgs\/2022\/07\/04\/ebc984a7aea992fb.png\" \/><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Armadillo material, in general, tends to be more\u00a0viscous than PLA and even ABS. It may even keep coming out of the nozzle at the end of the printing process, as you can see under the microscope.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.facfox.com\/imgs\/2022\/07\/04\/764b57cbde63bd5a.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Our Armadillo Benchy ran into a bigger problem while printing the boat\u2019s bow. Under the microscope, you can see clearly the layers didn\u2019t adhere properly.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/img.facfox.com\/imgs\/2022\/07\/04\/88eb4f39ac40273a.png\" \/><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Other than these issues, the Benchy is passable. In addition, the color is consistent with a glossy shimmer to it.<\/p>\n<p>Next, we printed two more models \u2013 the first one was the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thingiverse.com\/thing:2917515\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Predator Action Pliers<\/a>. It\u2019s a great, but somewhat difficult design to 3D print, as the whole mechanism is delicate.\u00a0Printed in NinjaTek Armadillo filament, on the other hand, the model proved to be a breeze, turning out pretty much perfect using the standard specified settings for the material.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/img.facfox.com\/imgs\/2022\/07\/04\/922eb08e47d8b24b.png\" \/><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Stringing aside, the print turned out pretty awesome. The geared mechanism, which often breaks when pried from the build plate or gets \u201cbaked together\u201d during the printing process, printed nicely with no issues.<\/p>\n<p>As a final print, we ran with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thingiverse.com\/thing:1008943\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">two-part carabiner<\/a>\u00a0from Thingiverse. Again, Armadillo delivered a pleasing and rigid print.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/img.facfox.com\/imgs\/2022\/07\/04\/65ac9378bd4495cc.png\" \/><\/div>\n<div>\n<h3>All3DP\u2019s Verdict<\/h3>\n<p>Even if we encountered some inconsistencies with our Benchy test print, we recommend Armadillo for anything that needs to be strong, durable and requires a high abrasion\u00a0resistance.<\/p>\n<p>NinjaTek says that Armadillo filament has 84% more abrasion resistance than PLA, 60% more than ABS, and up to 90% more than Nylon filaments. Also, it is known to be\u00a0chemically resistant to substances such as Naphtha, Petroleum,\u00a0and Freon.<\/p>\n<p>The printing process itself was incredibly smooth for TPU \u2013 the 3D printing properties are amazing.\u00a0Still, you should be prepared to tweak\u00a0the settings to get optimal prints on your 3D printer.<\/p>\n<p>If you are printing drone parts or heavily used tools, Armadillo will do the job. It is perfect for any outdoor types. Still, it\u2019s not the best material to 3D print delicate parts, as it tends to be somewhat fibrous.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"headline headline--xxl\">Specs and Settings<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/img.facfox.com\/imgs\/2022\/07\/04\/630030498d74418f.png\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>These are the\u00a0setting you need to 3D print Ninjatek Armadillo.\u00a0Polyurethane is more difficult to\u00a03D print than PLA, so you might want to experiment with the setting suggested by the manufacturer. You can find the complete\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/s\/dnxcc7l8ppma8j2\/datasheet_timberfill.pdf?dl=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">data sheet here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4>PRINTER SETTINGS FOR NINJATEK ARMADILLO<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Filament diameter:<\/strong>\u00a01.75mm, 3mm<br \/>\n<strong>Print temperature:<\/strong>\u00a0220 \u2013 230 \u00b0C<br \/>\n<strong>Bed temperature:<\/strong>\u00a0Room Temperature \u2013 45 \u00b0C<br \/>\n<strong>Suggested Printing speed:<\/strong>\u00a015-20 mm\/sec<br \/>\n<strong>Minimum nozzle diameter:<\/strong>\u00a00,4 mm<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"listicle-header listicle-header--no-space listicle-header--no-position\">\n<div class=\"listicle-header__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"listicle-header__content\">\n<h3 class=\"headline headline--xxl\">How we Review<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"container\">\n<div class=\"rich-text rich-text--full\">\n<p>Friday is All3DP\u2019s \u201cFilament Friday\u201d, where we take a spool of filament for a short test ride.<\/p>\n<p>Every spool is brand new and unopened.<\/p>\n<p>First, we 3D print a Benchy and check for any inconsistencies. Then we print one or two other 3D printables \u2013 and provide you with the results. Slicing is done in the latest version of Cura unless noted otherwise. The prints aren\u2019t post-processed in any way; we just remove the support structures.<\/p>\n<p>As for the printing settings, we take temperature and speed recommendations directly from the manufacturer. If the manufacturer offers a range, we go for the arithmetic middle. So if the manufacturer offers a range from 180-220 degree Celsius, we will set the printer for 200 degree Celsius (unless noted otherwise).<\/p>\n<p>As a printer, we use a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/all3dp.com\/1\/original-prusa-i3-mk3-review\/\">Prusa i3 Mk3<\/a>\u00a0for 1,75 mm filament and a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/all3dp.com\/1\/lulzbolz-taz-6-3d-printer-review\/\">Lulzbot TAZ 6<\/a>\u00a0for 2,85mm and 3mm filament diameter.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, every spool is different. Even within a filament range, quality may vary. We\u2018re also aware that tweaking other settings like retraction can be the gap between a successful and a failed print.
