But in case you aren\u2019t, a slicer is a program that turns a 3D model file (<a href=\"https:\/\/all3dp.com\/3d-file-format-3d-files-3d-printer-3d-cad-vrml-stl-obj\/\">STL, OBJ, 3MF, etc.<\/a>) into a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/all3dp.com\/topic\/g-code\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">G-code<\/a>\u00a0script, which can be interpreted by your machine\u2019s firmware.<\/p>\n<p>Without a slicer, your printer wouldn\u2019t know how to function. With it, you can specify settings that dictate how your model will be printed. If you don\u2019t already have one, some super powerful and popular slicers include\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/all3dp.com\/topic\/ultimaker-cura-software\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cura<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/all3dp.com\/2\/prusaslicer-simply-explained\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PrusaSlicer<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/all3dp.com\/topic\/simplify3d\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Simplify3D<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Slicer settings are important because every 3D printer is different, every material is different, and every 3D model is different. Printers and materials will therefore always require different settings to achieve a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/all3dp.com\/2\/3d-print-quality-12-tips-on-how-to-improve-it\/\">good print quality<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Slicer settings cover all aspects of printing, from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/all3dp.com\/2\/the-best-printing-temperature-for-different-filaments\/\">temperature of the heated elements<\/a>\u00a0to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/all3dp.com\/2\/3d-printing-wall-thickness-what-to-consider-for-a-perfect-print\/\">thickness of each wall and layer<\/a>. If you want the highest quality prints or just to print something as quickly as possible, you have to know the primary settings to change on your slicer.<\/p>\n<p>In this article, we\u2019ll go over 10 slicer settings that are fundamental to 3D printing. For each setting, we\u2019ll discuss what it is and what it affects so that you can decide how you want to use it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/all3dp.com\/2\/3d-printing-terminology-3d-printing-terms\/\">3D Printing Terminology: All Important 3D Printing Terms<\/a><\/div>\n<div>\n<h3 class=\"headline headline--xxl\">Temperature<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<figure style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.facfox.com\/imgs\/2022\/07\/04\/fb98b3065439a730.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"621\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The nozzle and bed temperatures are two of the most important settings you can tune (Source: d0gbait via Reddit)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>First up is temperature. The temperature of the nozzle is the single most important setting in your slicer because, without a Goldilocks level of heat (not too cool, not too hot), no print will work. Nozzle temperature should be the first thing you tune on your slicer whenever you begin printing with a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/all3dp.com\/1\/3d-printer-filament-types-3d-printing-3d-filament\/\">new filament<\/a>, and you can do this by printing a temperature tower to see which values work best.<\/p>\n<p>Too high a nozzle temperature will cause\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/all3dp.com\/2\/over-extrusion-3d-printing-tips-and-tricks-to-solve-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">over-extrusion<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/all3dp.com\/2\/3d-print-zits-tips-tricks-to-avoid-blobs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blobs and zits<\/a>\u00a0all over your print. At the other end of the spectrum, too low of a temperature will cause\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/all3dp.com\/2\/under-extrusion-3d-printing-all-you-need-to-know\/\">under-extrusion<\/a>, where not all the layers are fully printed.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s just for the nozzle temperature, though; bed temperature is a whole other player in 3D printing if your machine has a heated bed. If so, bed temperature is another setting you can adjust, and it will affect your print\u2019s bed adhesion. Generally speaking, a hotter bed will provide better adhesion, while a cooler one could lead to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/all3dp.com\/2\/3d-print-warping-what-it-is-how-to-fix-it\/\">warping<\/a>. Retraction determines how much and how fast filament is sucked back into the nozzle to prevent material from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/all3dp.com\/2\/nozzle-clogging-vs-hot-end-oozing-what-s-the-difference\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">oozing<\/a>\u00a0out when it\u2019s not being extruded. Retraction is controlled by a few specific settings, chief among them being retraction distance and retraction speed.<\/p>\n<p>These settings should be adjusted when you see stringing, but be mindful that retraction isn\u2019t the only solution to this problem and nozzle temperature also plays a role. You should change your retraction settings in small intervals and don\u2019t make any significant increases until you\u2019ve tried lowering the temperature. For example, with a 100% flow rating, your printer might use 10 cm of filament for a particular part feature, but if you change the flow to 90%, the same feature would only require 9 cm. In the end, adjusting flow affects how many steps the extruder\u2019s motor turns per millimeter of material deposited.<\/p>\n<p>Flow can be used to account for over or under-extrusion on your printer without adjusting a printer\u2019s E-step parameter, a value stored in firmware. While technically, flow and E-steps can both be used to solve the same problems, it\u2019s best to tune the E-step value during printer calibration and adjust flow as required by particular print jobs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/all3dp.com\/2\/extruder-calibration-6-easy-steps-2\/\">Extruder Calibration: How to Calibrate E-Steps<\/a><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"headline headline--xxl\">Adhesion Assistant<\/h3>\n<figure style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.facfox.com\/imgs\/2022\/07\/04\/a6a9e21195170588.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"613\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brims provide a good balance between material consumption and bed adhesion (Source: UTA_FabLab via Thingiverse)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>An adhesion assistant is a physical feature added to a print \u2013 auto-generated by the slicer when instructed to do so \u2013 which is designed to enhance\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/all3dp.com\/2\/3d-printer-bed-adhesion-all-you-need-to-know\/\">bed adhesion<\/a>. Bed adhesion is how well a part sticks to the build surface, and it\u2019s typically most important for the first layer. An adhesion assistant comes in three main forms:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Skirt:<\/strong>\u00a0A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/all3dp.com\/2\/3d-printer-bed-adhesion-all-you-need-to-know\/\">skirt<\/a>\u00a0is a distant and detached perimeter that outlines a print. Skirts provide no real adhesion assistance for a model but help get material flowing through the nozzle in time for the first layer to start. They can also be useful for making last-minute manual adjustments to a bed\u2019s levelness. Unless set otherwise, many slicers will automatically generate a skirt for every print.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Brim:<\/strong>\u00a0A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/all3dp.com\/2\/3d-printing-brim-when-should-you-use-it\/\">brim<\/a>\u00a0is a set of lines attached to the outside of a print\u2019s first layer, sprawling from its base. If your print were a cylinder, the brim would literally look like the brim of a top hat. As far as adhesion assistants go, this is the first step to take if a model is having bed\u00a0 adhesion issues (because it has small \u201cfeet\u201d, for example).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Raft:<\/strong>\u00a0A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/all3dp.com\/2\/3d-printing-raft-when-should-you-use-it\/\">raft<\/a>\u00a0is a complete base upon which your model grows. When printing rafts, slicers generally attempt to save material by putting space between adjacent lines. This is the no-holds-barred approach to bed adhesion, as your print never has to touch the surface. (This is often useful when warping is an issue.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As you might expect, a skirt takes up the least amount of material and print time, followed by a brim and then a raft.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"headline headline--xxl\">Supports<\/h3>\n<figure style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.facfox.com\/imgs\/2022\/07\/04\/c8a669f536ecd8ac.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"612\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Make sure your support settings are tuned correctly (Source: AmeraLabs)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Supports are another significant slicer setting and, like adhesion assistants, are slicer-generated. Supports are structures that hold up\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/all3dp.com\/2\/3d-printing-overhang-how-to-master-overhangs-exceeding-45\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">overhanging features<\/a>\u00a0on models if they meet certain requirements, which can be set in your slicer.<\/p>\n<p>These requirements include the overhang angle and the minimum support area. The former determines the minimum angle an overhang has to be before the slicer creates a support to hold it up. The latter governs the minimum area (in mm<sup>2<\/sup>) that a support structure has to have to be included in a print.<\/p>\n<p>Other support settings and options are also very important. For example,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/all3dp.com\/2\/3d-print-orientation-troubleshooting\/\">part orientation<\/a>\u00a0plays a key role in how support structures are generated. Other support settings include print speed, support infill density, and more. You shouldn\u2019t change these settings at all if your model doesn\u2019t require supports in the first place, but when necessary, you can tweak them to find a balance between sufficient support and minimum material consumed.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"headline headline--xxl\">Cooling<\/h3>\n<figure style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.facfox.com\/imgs\/2022\/07\/04\/0260ad77a1c66916.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"593\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fans are important for printing overhangs (Source: JP1 via Pinshape)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Next up is cooling, which determines the power of the fans on your printer. While there may be fans around your printer\u2019s mainboard, power supply unit, and hot end, cooling usually refers just to the speed of your part-cooling fan. This fan\u2019s speed can typically be set and adjusted as a percentage of total power.<\/p>\n<p>When adjusting the speed of your part-cooling fan, consider the material you\u2019re currently printing with. For example,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/all3dp.com\/1\/pla-filament-3d-printing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PLA<\/a>\u00a0requires moderate cooling from the part-cooling fan, but\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/all3dp.com\/abs-3d-printer-filament-explained\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ABS<\/a>\u00a0shouldn\u2019t have any (because cooling can lead to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/all3dp.com\/2\/3d-print-delamination-tips-tricks-to-avoid-layer-separation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cracking<\/a>). Infill allows you to better control the strength, weight, material consumption, and internal structure of a part without having to adjust its appearance or external features. In a slicer, infill can be controlled using infill density, set as a percentage, and infill pattern, which is the infill\u2019s structure or form.<\/p>\n<p>More robust infill patterns and larger infill densities will extend printing times and consume more materials but\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/all3dp.com\/2\/3d-printing-strength-strongest-infill\/\">increase a part\u2019s strength<\/a>\u00a0and weight. There are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/all3dp.com\/2\/cura-infill-patterns-all-you-need-to-know\/\">many infill patterns<\/a>\u00a0to choose from, each with its own design and characteristics, like concentric (for flexible parts), cubic (strong), and lines (fast). If infill is the \u201cinside\u201d of a print, shells are the \u201coutside\u201d, which means they are\u00a0completely solid and printed concentrically. Shell thickness is usually set as a value in millimeters or as a number of layers, individually for the walls and the top and bottom layers.<\/p>\n<p>Shell thickness is an important setting to tune because it can significantly impact the strength of your model. The higher the shell thickness, the stronger parts will be and the longer they will take to print.
