3D printed fashion\u00a0includes everything\u00a0that\u2019s wearable and\u00a03D printed, from dresses and shoes to accessories.<\/p>\n

Although we won\u2019t be seeing 3D printed fashion in our local clothing stores just yet, 3D printing has brought a fresh wave of innovation to runway shows and has great potential as a new mass-customization solution.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s 3D printing technologies are advanced enough to easily produce shoe soles and jewelry, but it\u2019s still a relatively challenging process to 3D print a dress or a jacket.<\/p>\n

Garments present one of the biggest challenges for designers to overcome, given that they need to be very flexible. For the most part, 3D printing is used for producing non-flexible parts. That\u2019s why 3D printing fashion is a very expensive process still reserved for runway shows.<\/p>\n

Today, most 3D printed garments are typically built using mesh systems, which are individually 3D printed and later assembled.<\/p>\n

Despite all of the challenges that come with 3D printed fashion, designers alongside engineers have managed to overcome many in order to produce some of their\u00a0wildest designs. We\u2019ll take a look at a few in this article.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Garment \u2014 the most challenging sector of 3D printed fashion.<\/p>\n

Because it\u2019s soft and \u201cmoves around\u201d, it has always been a challenge for designers to 3D print flexible clothing.\u00a03D printing is mostly used for the production of rigid, non-flexible parts.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s where clever mesh designs and other innovations come in.<\/p>\n

Although 3D printed apparel is still mostly reserved for runway shows, there are some promising projects. Thanks to them, 3D printed apparel is getting closer and closer to\u00a0local\u00a0retail stores. The following are some of the most impressive projects to date.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Back in 2015, Danit Peleg introduced her first ever fashion collection,\u00a0Liberty Leading The People<\/a>, which was also her graduation project at the Shankar College of Design.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s so special about Peleg\u2019s 3D printed clothing is that she made it all at home, on a 3D printer that fits\u00a0on most desks. Apart from that, the fact that she had no previous experience in 3D printing makes this project even more impressive.<\/p>\n

Most fashion items from the Liberty Leading The People collection were assembled from multiple 3D printed parts. Using the mesh design on the dress, the designer achieved the desired flexibility and drew quite a bit of attention on the runway.<\/p>\n

Since the introduction of her first 3D printed clothes collection, Peleg created another impressive collection,\u00a0The Birth Of Venus<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Peleg\u2019s ultimate goal is to make 3D printed fashion more accessible. In other words, she wants to take\u00a0it off the runway. To achieve that, she introduced the\u00a0first 3D printed garment available for purchase<\/a>.\u00a0It\u2019s a jacket and sells on her website for $1500.<\/p>\n

The 3D printed jacket is limited to only 100 pieces due to the 3D printer\u2019s capacity and work speed, but it\u2019s a perfect example of how 3D printing could become a mass customization solution.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Apparel Example #2: threeASFOUR — 3D Printed Dress<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The Pangolin 3D printed dress uses a nano-enhanced elastomer 3D printing material, which gives\u00a0it\u00a0both flexibility and durability. It was created\u00a0in collaboration between threeASFOUR, Stratasys, and architect Travis Fitch.<\/p>\n

The dress was printed on 10 printers and took 500 hours to complete. After printing, all the \u201cchain-like\u201d parts were connected together to form the dress. The\u00a0creators claim that each unit of the dress\u00a0functions by itself in order to produce a 3D effect while moving.<\/p>\n

Apparel Example #3: Ministry of Supply — Jacket Without Seams<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

In 2016,\u00a0Ministry of Supply<\/a>\u00a0introduced a 3D printed jacket, which at a price of $250, sold out incredibly fast.<\/p>\n

Because the jacket is 3D printed, there are no seams, which makes it a very comfortable garment. And despite the lack of seams, the garment still features articulated joints for\u00a0the purpose of following your body\u2019s contours.<\/p>\n

The jacket was made on a 3D robotic knitting machine, a process which saves material over traditional knitting. It\u2019s\u00a0thought\u00a0that 15\u201330% of the material gets wasted with conventional methods.<\/p>\n

Thanks to 3D modeling, the jacket can be perfectly suited to each individual. Pair that with no seams, and you\u2019ve got a winning combo!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The\u00a0Lo Scienziato timepiece from Panerai\u00a0features a fully 3D printed titanium housing made through\u00a0direct metal laser sintering (DMLS)<\/a>.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019d like to\u00a0see a Panerai on your wrist, you\u2019ll need to spend a whopping $170,000. This is a good example of just how exclusive and rare 3D printed fashion\u00a0accessories can be.<\/p>\n

XYZ\u00a0Bag is an Italian brand behind the\u00a0Dada collection<\/a>\u00a0of customizable 3D printed handbags. Each bag consists of a leather strap attached to a 3D printed shell with a fabric lining.<\/p>\n

Thanks to 3D printing, the purses can be completely personalized with different texts and colors. When you click on one of the bags on their website, a configurator loads up so that you can customize the bag\u00a0before proceeding to checkout.<\/p>\n

The bags are priced between 290 and 330\u00a0euros, which is rather expensive but also reasonable for a 3D printed product.<\/p>\n

Although\u00a0there\u2019s no exact information on which technology was used for printing the Dada purses, the website reveals that production starts with a bed of nylon. Based on that info, we\u2019re guessing\u00a0the technology is SLS.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Big players in the footwear industry have been developing\u00a0solutions for mass customization for years. 3D printing not only enables these companies to prototype much faster, it\u2019s also a great solution for mass customization.<\/p>\n

Companies diving into the arena include\u00a0Adidas and New Balance, who are starting to 3D print midsoles.\u00a0Nike, in the meantime, is experimenting with 3D printed \u201cuppers\u201d.<\/p>\n

The future for 3D printed footwear looks exciting.\u00a0Whether athlete or fashionista, anyone could\u00a0soon have perfectly-fitted\u00a0shoes thanks to 3D printing.<\/p>\n

Here are two examples of 3D printed footwear to give you a taste of what\u2019s on the horizon.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Teaming up with\u00a0Carbon<\/a>, a company specializes resin 3D printing, Adidas recently\u00a0developed\u00a0the first mass-produced 3D printed midsole.<\/p>\n

With the goal of providing maximum running comfort, Adidas decided 3D printing was the only way of making the complex shape\u00a0they were looking for in their\u00a0Futurecraft 4D<\/a>\u00a0shoes.<\/p>\n

Using traditional manufacturing techniques, the 4D midsole would be extremely hard, if not impossible, to produce. With Carbon\u2019s 3D printing technology, Adidas can\u00a0easily accomplish the desired structure, which features a complex lattice.<\/p>\n

Last year Adidas pioneered the midsole, implementing it into shoes like the\u00a0Daniel Arsham x Adidas<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Through additive manufacturing, Adidas is striving for mass customization with the concept of offering customers the ability to personalize their shoes.<\/p>\n

Footwear Example #2: Ganit Goldstein — Old Meets New<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

With the help of Stratasys, designer\u00a0Ganit Goldstein<\/a>\u00a0produced a 3D printed woven shoe. The piece is part of the project Between the Layers, which consists of numerous 3D printed shoes and garments.<\/p>\n

The shoe was\u00a0created\u00a0using a Stratasys Connex3 3D printer, which has the ability to print multiple colors and materials. Alongside 3D printing, Goldstein made use of\u00a0ikat<\/a>, an Eastern technique for dying woven fabrics.<\/p>\n

The shoes were showcased on December 17th in San Francisco during the\u00a0Arts of Fashion Competition 2018<\/a>.<\/p>\n
