The right print temperature for PETG can be elusive. Read on to learn all you need to know about PETG bed and print temperature settings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

In recent years, countless new filaments have been introduced, each with a unique set of properties. One of them, PETG, has gained a lot of popularity, and rightfully so. It\u2019s\u00a0stronger and more durable than ABS<\/a>, yet it\u00a0prints as easily as PLA<\/a>.<\/p>\n

PETG is incredibly alluring because it\u2019s compatible with almost any\u00a0FDM<\/a>\u00a0printer, has many good qualities, and is reasonably priced. However, since it\u2019s relatively new, many people don\u2019t yet know how to correctly print with it.<\/p>\n

Although we can provide some typical ranges, unfortunately there\u2019s no perfect universal print temperature for PETG. Each brand of filament is slightly different. But don\u2019t worry, we\u2019re here to help! In this article, we\u2019ll be going over and giving you everything you need to\u00a0determine the perfect temperature for your particular brand of PETG.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Finding the Perfect Temperature<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n

Although there\u2019s a general range of temperatures that work best for PETG, you must determine the precise temperature for your particular spool of filament.<\/p>\n

The easiest way to find the best temperature is through trial and error. Conduct many\u00a0test prints<\/a>\u00a0and compare results. Each print should be done at a low\u00a0speed<\/a>, to ensure that the only factor affecting printing is temperature.<\/p>\n

Start at the bottom of the given range, and print tests at five-degree intervals. Look out for the common effects of temperature\u00a0being too high or low\u00a0(provided in the following). Once you have explored printing throughout the entire range, compare your prints and determine which temperature produced the best results with your filament.<\/p>\n

If you don\u2019t mind playing around with\u00a0G-code<\/a>, an even faster method to determine the ideal temperature is to use a\u00a0temperature tower<\/a>. If all goes well, you\u2019ll only need to run a single test.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Similar to ABS, PETG requires much hotter temperatures than PLA. In general, the hot end should be heated to between 220 and 250 \u00b0C.<\/p>\n

If the\u00a0layers<\/a>\u00a0of the print don\u2019t adhere, your temperature is too low. This is a common problem, so ensure that the hot end temperature is high enough.<\/p>\n

Though\u00a0fairly rare\u00a0with PETG,\u00a0if the print comes out droopy and messy, the temperature is too hot.<\/p>\n

Despite this, PETG will normally print without defects within the given range.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Unlike ABS, PETG doesn\u2019t require a heated bed, as it doesn\u2019t undergo nearly as much\u00a0warping<\/a>.<\/p>\n

However, it\u2019s very helpful to still heat your\u00a0print bed<\/a>. If you do, set it to temperatures similar to what PLA uses: 50 to 75 \u00b0C will help ensure that the extruded filament sticks. Some makers even claim to print at temperatures as high as 100 \u00b0C!<\/p>\n

As with hot end temperatures, incorrect temperatures for the bed may result in certain defects. If the bed is too hot, it\u2019s very common to experience a phenomenon known as\u00a0elephant\u2019s foot<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Alternatively, if the filament isn\u2019t properly sticking to the bed, it may be too cold. Naturally, this can also happen if you\u2019re printing without a heated bed. The best way to solve this problem would be to apply some sort of adhesive to the surface, such as a\u00a0glue stick<\/a>\u00a0or blue painter\u2019s\u00a0tape<\/a>.<\/p>\n
