Nylon can be 3D printed either from powder or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/docs\/kb\/the-best-nylon-filaments-in-2022\">filament<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4>PHYSICAL PROPERTIES<\/h4>\n<p>Despite being slightly tricky to 3D print, the effort is rewarded by the material\u2019s properties. Nylon is a popular choice in industrial 3D printing as it\u2019s strong, durable, and abrasion-resistant. If printed thin enough, it can provide decent flexibility while maintaining toughness.<\/p>\n<p>Nylon\u2019s low coefficient of friction also means it\u2019s well suited for making functional moving parts. Therefore, nylon is often used for making functional prototypes, living hinges, gears, and similar end-use parts.<\/p>\n<h4>CHEMICAL PROPERTIES<\/h4>\n<p>To completely understand nylon 3D printing, it\u2019s important to know about two other properties. One, it has a high melting point, and two, it\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/docs\/kb\/hygroscopy-3d-printing-what-it-is-how-to-deal-with-it\">hygroscopic<\/a>, meaning it loves to absorb moisture. This second property can be an advantage, but also has its cons. While the surface of a printed part allows\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/docs\/kb\/the-best-paint-for-pla-petg-abs-nylon\">paint<\/a>\u00a0to adhere very well, it also absorbs moisture from the air, which can eventually affect the performance of a part.<\/p>\n<p>In this article, we\u2019ll be going deeper into nylon printing and the different technologies that you can print it with. Luckily, it\u2019s possible to 3D print nylon using an FDM printer paired with special\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/docs\/kb\/the-best-nylon-filaments-in-2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nylon filament<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>FDM 3D printers use filaments, which are melted and then extruded through a nozzle onto the build platform in layers, until the part is complete. While 3D printing nylon on an FDM printer is much more accessible than SLS or MJF, the quality of an FDM-printed nylon part is not as impressive.<\/p>\n<p>Firstly, not all FDM printers can handle nylon filament with ease. It\u2019s important to have a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/docs\/kb\/the-best-3d-printer-extruder-hot-ends-of-2021\">quality (all-metal) hot end<\/a>\u00a0that can handle temperatures above 250 \u00b0C. Apart from that, nylon is also prone to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/docs\/kb\/3d-print-warping-pla-petg-abs-3-easy-fixes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">warping<\/a>, so\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/docs\/kb\/3d-printer-bed-adhesion-all-you-need-to-know\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bed adhesion<\/a>\u00a0is an issue of its own.<\/p>\n<p>Nylon filament comes in different variations, the most common being PA 6 and PA 66. Both of these have the standard nylon properties of strength, abrasion resistance, and low coefficient of friction, but come with one substantial flaw: high moisture absorption.<\/p>\n<h3>Storage &amp; Printing<\/h3>\n<figure style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.facfox.com\/imgs\/2022\/03\/568ea18e43cf861d.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"562\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nylon filament requires a heated bed and high nozzle temperature (Source: SourceGraphics)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>High moisture absorption can have a negative impact on the filament in the form of degradation. When degraded, filament starts to lose its properties, and nylon filament can start to degrade in a matter of hours. To prevent such a scenario,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/docs\/kb\/3d-printer-filament-storage-12-ways-to-store-filament\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">proper storage<\/a>\u00a0is crucial.<\/p>\n<p>A simple plastic airtight container is a good solution when the filament is not being used, but what to do when printing? The ideal solution is a storage unit with humidity control, which also allows the filament to get into the extruder.\u00a0If it\u2019s too late, and your spool has already absorbed too much moisture, it might be able to be saved if you properly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/docs\/kb\/how-to-dry-filament-pla-abs-nylon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dry your filament<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve got the storage figured out, it\u2019ll be time to start printing with nylon filament. Although it always depends on the exact printer and material you\u2019re using, and you should always consider the manufacturer\u2019s recommended settings, here\u2019s an overview of basic nylon printing settings:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Nozzle temperature:<\/strong>\u00a0240-290 \u00b0C<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bed temperature:<\/strong>\u00a0Up to 65 \u00b0C<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bed surface:<\/strong>\u00a0<a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s?k=PVA+glue+stick+3D+printing&amp;tag=all3dp0c-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">PVA glue stick<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s?k=magigoo&amp;tag=all3dp0c-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Magigoo<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s?k=Garolite&amp;tag=all3dp0c-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Garolite<\/a>, 3DLac<\/li>\n<li><strong>Print speed:<\/strong>\u00a025-50 mm\/s<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fan speed:<\/strong>\u00a00-50%<\/li>\n<li><strong>Enclosure:<\/strong>\u00a0Recommended, but not necessary<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Working with nylon is a bit difficult with an FDM printer, but if you have the equipment, the material is well suited to SLS and MJF.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"headline headline--xxl\">SLS<\/h3>\n<figure style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.facfox.com\/imgs\/2022\/03\/b5c48e6909d19f09.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"595\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">SLS uses a laser to fuse the nylon powder, layer by layer (Source: Formlabs via YouTube)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>SLS uses a laser to sinter a powder, layer by layer, until the part is complete. There are different types of laser sintering technologies \u2013 there are adaptations for metal and glass \u2013\u00a0but\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/docs\/kb\/the-best-sls-3d-printers-of-2022\">most SLS 3D printers<\/a>\u00a0are oriented towards polymers.<\/p>\n<h4>MATERIALS<\/h4>\n<p>One of the main materials used with SLS is nylon, specifically PA 11 and PA 12 nylon powders. PA 11 powders are used for parts that require UV and impact resistance, while PA 12 is preferred for enhanced part strength and stiffness. There are also reinforced PA powders, also known as nylon composite powders, which usually contain either glass, aluminum, or carbon fiber particles in addition to nylon.<\/p>\n<h4>ADVANTAGES<\/h4>\n<p>When complete, parts are completely surrounded by unsintered powder, which also acts as support for the sintered parts. Luckily, with SLS it\u2019s possible to re-use up to 50-70% of that unsintered powder for future prints. From a sustainability perspective, this is an advantage over FDM, as any material extruded as supports generally won\u2019t be converted back into filament for re-use.<\/p>\n<p>Compared to FDM, SLS is more suited for 3D printing with nylon. Nylon is great for making functional parts, and SLS both has the ability to produce complex functional parts and gains strength from using powder rather than filament.<\/p>\n<h4>DISADVANTAGES<\/h4>\n<p>The downside to SLS is the cost associated with it. Industrial SLS 3D printers often come with price tags north of $200,000. The good news is that in recent times we\u2019ve seen more affordable solutions come to the market such as\u00a0Formlabs\u2019s Fuse 1\u00a0desktop SLS machine priced at circa $10,000. For the powders, expect to pay at least $60 per kg.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"headline headline--xxl\">MJF<\/h3>\n<figure style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.facfox.com\/imgs\/2022\/03\/89715dad514ab425.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"595\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thanks to MJF, HP is one of the leading firms when it comes to nylon 3D printing (Source: CAD MicroSolutions)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>MJF is a unique powder sintering technology developed by Hewlett Packard and launched in 2016. MJF is similar to SLS, but also shares a thing or two with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/docs\/kb\/betting-on-binder-jetting-for-production-additive-manufacturing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">binder jetting<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4>HOW IT WORKS<\/h4>\n<p>Both MJF and SLS start the printing process in the same manner. A layer of powder is distributed onto the build platform before the sintering begins. However, whereas in SLS the laser would then start sintering, MJF introduces an extra step to the printing process in the form of chemical agents.<\/p>\n<p>A fusing agent is sprayed on top of each fresh layer of powder, precisely where the future layers will be sintered. The fusing agent is there to help the powder absorb the energy from the printer\u2019s heat source. While SLS uses a high-powered laser, MJF relies on a high-powered infrared light as a heat source. The infrared light paired with the fusing agent speeds up the sintering process, making MJF generally faster than SLS.<\/p>\n<h4>ADVANTAGES<\/h4>\n<p>Although both technologies are able to produce some phenomenal details on parts, MJF edges in front of SLS when it comes to details on prints. This is partly thanks to a detailing agent, which helps make edges as sharp as possible by slightly reducing the fusing potential at the very edge of a part.<\/p>\n<p>After the printing is done, you\u2019ll be able to recycle the non-sintered powder, just like with SLS. However, MJF enables even more powder to be reused, even up to 80%.
