Combining 3D printing with generative design, the company\u2019s approach to vehicle development is \u201ccompletely transformed,\u201d says Ken Kelzer, VP of Global Vehicle Components and Subsystems at GM.<\/p>\n<p>Through paring these technologies the design process becomes \u201cfundamentally different to co-create with the computer in ways we simply couldn\u2019t have imagined before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"GM and Autodesk are using generative design for vehicles of the future\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oj7uw9FIEkQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Trends in generative design<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Generative design brings a natural element to the traditional means of 3D modeling. Instead of stock shapes, or sculpted geometries, the process works using a set of parameters that essentially allow a design to \u201cgrow\u201d thousands, or millions, of potential parts.<\/p>\n<p>The automated process enables the creation geometries at odds with conventional shape, and 3D printing, a method that allows the fabrication of previously \u201cimpossible\u201d objects, is its perfect partner.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"thepasted-1\" src=\"https:\/\/3dprintingindustry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/options-1024x574.png\" alt=\"Potential parts generated by Autodesk's design platform for General Motors. Image via Autodesk<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>New York based advanced CAD developer\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntopology.com\/\">nTopology<\/a>\u00a0is a\u00a0well known name in generative design.\u00a02018 3D Printing Industry Awards nominee\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.frustum.com\/\">Frustum Inc.<\/a>\u00a0is a startup that has developed a generative design platform specially for additive manufacturing, and at\u00a0SOLIDWORKS World event in LA\u00a0Desktop Metal previewed its\u00a0Live Parts platform\u00a0making use of the technology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGenerative design is the future of manufacturing, and GM is a pioneer in using it to lightweight their future vehicles,\u201d comments Scott Reese, Autodesk Senior Vice President for Manufacturing and Construction Products. \u201cGenerative technologies fundamentally change\u00a0how engineering work is done because the manufacturing process is built into design options from the start.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the automotive world, computer design startup\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/hackrod.com\/\">Hackrod<\/a>\u00a0is also working with Autodesk generative design to\u00a0create custom hotrods.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The upper hand on part design<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As identified by Reese, a helping-hand for light weighting is one the advantages of adopting generative design over other more conventional design methods. GM is committed to reducing the mass of vehicles, through generative design and otherwise, to optimize interior space for drivers\/passengers, and improve car performance.<\/p>\n<p>From 2016 \u2013 2018 GM has released 14 vehicle models with an average mass reduction of\u00a0more than 350 pounds per vehicle.
