Simple, right? In truth, there are lots of ways your designs can get tripped up, and many issues may emerge from parts that fail to design with manufacturability in mind.<\/p>\n<p>This tip will help you improve your part design, shorten run time, and maybe even save some costs along the way. The list comes from common issues our applications engineers have seen often in quote requests. It\u2019s not an exhaustive list (only your closest relatives can tell you <em>everything<\/em> you\u2019re doing wrong), but it hits some highlights.<\/p>\n<h3>1. Avoid Non-Uniform Wall Thickness for Molded Parts<\/h3>\n<p>When designing a part for injection molding, having the <a title=\"Improving Part Design with Uniform Wall Thickness\" href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/docs\/kb\/improving-part-design-with-uniform-wall-thickness\" data-udi=\"umb:\/\/document\/02bc9007138e4e18a6bcd6fb17c1b136\">wall thickness<\/a> come as close to uniform as possible will make for a stronger part. Otherwise, for example, thinner areas will tend to sink and warp. If you need to design thinner walls in places, they should be no less than 40-60% the width of adjacent walls. And watch out\u2014some materials have quite specific thickness requirements to keep parts strong. Knowing material specifications can save you a lot of pain later.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_162569\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-162569\" style=\"width: 570px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-162569 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Pasted-into-9-Mistakes-to-Avoid-When-Designing-Injection-Molded-Parts.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"570\" height=\"308\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-162569\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Strive for uniform wall thickness with molded parts. If you do need to design thinner walls in certain places, they should be no less than 40-60% the width of adjacent walls.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>2. Transition Gradually From Thick to Thin Areas in Molding<\/h3>\n<p>No one likes weak, saggy parts, so here\u2019s something to think about that will help you avoid them. After ejection from a mold, parts have to cool. Thin areas will inevitably cool faster than thick ones. That temperature differential can create weak areas, which lead to sink and warp. The solution is to avoid sharp differences in wall thickness, something we just touched on. Instead, create gradual transitions between these areas. You and your parts will be happy you did.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Be Cautious with C-Shaped Molded Parts<\/h3>\n<p>No matter how you turn it, C-shaped parts are inherently weak, unless supported. Poorly designed molded parts have a tendency to warp, especially when using glass-filled materials. Fiber-reinforced materials are used for their added strength properties, also for heat resistance. Fibers in the plastic counteract shrinkage effects due to molecular orientation whether in amorphous or semi-crystalline materials. But fibers don\u2019t expand or contract as temperature changes, so fiber-filled materials typically experience reduced shrinkage in the direction of their orientation.<\/p>\n<p>Because the fibers cause non-uniform shrink within the molded part, supported C-shaped parts can warp even more than an unfilled material.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_162570\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-162570\" style=\"width: 570px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-162570 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Pasted-into-9-Mistakes-to-Avoid-When-Designing-Injection-Molded-Parts-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"570\" height=\"308\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-162570\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Build radii wisely, only in necessary areas, for example, to eliminate sharp edges on the surface of the part that an end-user may touch, or in critical functional areas such as a lead-in to an assembly.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>4. Consider Carefully Your CAD File Format<\/h3>\n<p>Sometimes we get CAD files that were translated from .STL files. While .STL files are acceptable for 3D printing, they create problems with molded parts. That\u2019s because they reveal the part\u2019s surface as a series of triangles, rather than the true curves you would find on real parts.<\/p>\n<p>The bottom line is that we will be unable to quote these designs and send them back requesting changes, which costs you time.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, output your designs as STEP files using CAD software such as SOLIDWORKS, Inventor, Pro-E, Catia, or any number of others and define thicknesses clearly, then you\u2019ll be good to go.<\/p>\n<h3>5. Use Radii Wisely for Injection Molding<\/h3>\n<p>Building radii into a part can be a hit-and-miss proposition. Only use them in necessary areas, for example, to eliminate sharp edges that an end-user may touch, or in critical functional areas such as a lead-in to an assembly.<\/p>\n<p>Some radii are used on inside corners of critical features to make more robust geometry. Inside radii can also help on material flow patterns. In general, proper placement of corner radii can create stronger molded parts.<\/p>\n<h3>6. Be Careful with Parting Lines and Radii for Molding<\/h3>\n<p>Parting lines always make for interesting design and manufacturing challenges. Typically, we want them to be as unnoticeable as possible, and deciding where to locate them is an exercise filled with aesthetic and mechanical considerations. But watch out. If you try putting a fillet or radius around a parting line, you might end up with undesirable minor undercuts in your mold and maybe even flash.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_162571\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-162571\" style=\"width: 570px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-162571 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Pasted-into-9-Mistakes-to-Avoid-When-Designing-Injection-Molded-Parts-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"570\" height=\"308\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-162571\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cosmetic finishes aren\u2019t always necessary, though Protolabs offers an array of available surface finishes if needed, including SPI-A2, which is a Grade #2 Diamond Buff, and PM-T2, which provides a medium bead blast textured finish.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>7. Eliminate Undercuts in Molded Parts if Possible<\/h3>\n<p><a title=\"6 Ways to Achieve Undercut Success in Molded Parts\" href=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/docs\/kb\/6-ways-to-achieve-undercut-success-in-molded-parts\" data-udi=\"umb:\/\/document\/753f27b2db2b41c3b95b8efa0fffa8ca\">Undercuts<\/a> are features that make it difficult to eject a part from its mold. Sometimes these are created using techniques such as side-action cams or pick-out inserts, but these add manufacturing time due to molding costs and complexity. If it\u2019s possible to eliminate undercuts, it will definitely speed up manufacturing time.<\/p>\n<h3>8. Determine if Cosmetic Finishes are Necessary<\/h3>\n<p>Cosmetic finishes are possibly the most overlooked piece of the design puzzle. If you don\u2019t need them, don\u2019t order them. You can always go back and add cosmetic finishes to future parts, if necessary. It\u2019s yet another way to save yourself some time and expense. That said, if you do have any questions, don\u2019t hesitate to call our applications engineers to discuss specific finish grades. Also, don\u2019t forget that all-over finishes take longer to, ahem, <em>finish<\/em>, than targeting specific areas.<\/p>\n<h3>9. Treat Each Part as Separate Quote<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Assemblies represent a collection of parts, and sometimes you only want one of those parts quoted and manufactured. Even if you want pricing on every element contained in an assembly, treat each part as a separate quote. It makes it easier for us to figure out what you want quoted, and doing that will help speed up the quoting process.<\/p>\n<h3>General Injection Molding Rules that Totally Rule<\/h3>\n<p>Beyond those issues to avoid or carefully consider, here are some best practices items to keep in mind. We couldn\u2019t go through all this information without listing a few things you <em>should<\/em> do.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Shutoff angles<\/em><br \/>\nMaintaining a 3-degree shutoff between mold components is critical for long-lasting, robust molds.<\/li>\n<li><em>Text\/Engraving<\/em><br \/>\nTo get raised (embossed) text in your part, use engraving in your mold design. The text you mill into the mold will become raised text on your part. Milling the text into your mold is a fast process, leading to faster turnaround times. Also, maintain at least a 0.020 in. (0.508mm) stroke width to achieve clean text.<\/li>\n<li><em>Draft\/Thickness<br \/>\n<\/em>Our standard injection molding process relies on high-speed milling. As a general rule of thumb, use 1-degree of draft per inch of depth, and enough thickness to allow cutter penetration.<\/li>\n<li><em>The Push and Pull of Injection Molding<br \/>\n<\/em>Remember to avoid unnecessary undercuts (see No. 7). Push\/pull molds\u2014as compared to molds with additional components or actions\u2014not only save you money, but they also increase your expedite options.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_162572\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-162572\" style=\"width: 570px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-162572 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Pasted-into-9-Mistakes-to-Avoid-When-Designing-Injection-Molded-Parts-3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"570\" height=\"308\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-162572\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Adding draft angles to design helps facilitate ejection of a part from a mold and improves overall moldability.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Summing it Up<\/h3>\n<p>As always, no single design tip can cover all of the injection molding mistakes we\u2019ve seen, but this \u201cbest of\u201d collection is a start.
