Whereas plating is commonly done to prevent corrosion, stainless steel, with its high chromium content of 10 percent to 11 percent, is inherently resistant to corrosion, stains, and rust, though it is not completely stain-proof. Plating is also done for aesthetic reasons, to make the metal easier to solder, to make it metal more durable or harder, to reduce friction, to make the paint adhere more readily, to make the metal more or less conductive, or to shield it from radiation.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-104191 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/gold-plating-on-stainless-steel-500x500-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"373\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Stainless Steel<\/h2>\n<div class=\"section section-0\">\n<p>302 stainless steel and 304 stainless steel are designed for different applications. These stainless steels are made up of the same materials however, they contain different amounts of these materials.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3 data-for=\"Composition\">Composition<\/h3>\n<div class=\"section section-1\">\n<p>With a slightly lower chromium content than its counterpart, 302 stainless steel consists of a maximum .15 percent carbon, 17 percent to 19 percent chromium, 8 percent to 10 percent nickel, 2 percent manganese, 1 percent silicon, .03 percent sulfur and .04 percent phosphorous. Containing the same amounts of manganese, silicon, sulfur and phosphorous as 302 stainless steel, 304 stainless steel contains a maximum of .08 percent carbon, 19 percent to 20 percent chromium and 8 percent to 12 percent nickel.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3 data-for=\"Applications\">Applications<\/h3>\n<div class=\"section section-2\">\n<p>A general purposed steel, 302 stainless steel is designed to offer greater resistance to corrosion than 301 stainless steel. Constructed with a lower percentage of carbon, 304 stainless steel is designed to limit carbide precipitation. This type of stainless steel is often used in high-temperature applications.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"no-print\" data-ad-unit-name=\"sticky-video-player\" data-=\"\">\n<div class=\"video-player-container-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video-player-container\">\n<div class=\"video-player-wrapper\">\n<div id=\"video-player\" class=\"akamai-html5 akamai-player akamai-desktop akamai-muted akamai-autoplay akamai-active akamai-ready akamai-vod akamai-medium-video akamai-waiting amp-controls-auto amp-active\" data-amp=\"\">\n<div class=\"akamai-overlays akamai-layer\">\n<div class=\"akamai-captioning akamai-overlay\">\n<h3 data-for=\"Durability and Strength\">Durability and Strength<\/h3>\n<div class=\"section section-3\">\n<p>Both 302 and 304 stainless steels offer .29 pounds per cubic-inch density. The tensile strength of 302 and 304 stainless steels are 90,000 pounds per square inch (PSI) and 85,000 psi, respectively. Both types of stainless steel are easy to weld and create very durable welds.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 data-for=\"Electroplating\">Electroplating<\/h2>\n<div class=\"section section-1\">\n<p>Electroplating, also called electrodeposition, is a method of plating steel that can be likened to operating a battery in reverse. Rather than freeing electrons to create current, as a battery does, electroplating binds the extra electrons on the surface of an ionic metal with an anode. The anode is the positively charged metal in solution, which produces a non-ionic film on the steel. This method is used to plate stainless steel with copper for a finished product combining the strength of steel with the conductivity of copper.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 data-for=\"Brush Plating\">Brush Plating<\/h2>\n<div class=\"section section-2\">\n<p>Brush plating is a specific type of electroplating, and this is the preferred method for plating stainless steel with gold. After careful cleaning and polishing, the stainless steel is prepared with a bath of nickel strike solution. With a current running through the metal just as with regular electroplating, the gold plate is brushed on, which allows control of which sections end up plated and which do not.<\/p>\n<h2 data-for=\"Electroless Plating\">Electroless Plating<\/h2>\n<div class=\"section section-3\">\n<p>Electroless plating, so called because the process uses no external power, involves an aqueous solution in which several chemical reactions take place simultaneously. Sodium hypophosphite, or another reducing agent, releases hydrogen as hydride ions, which produce a negative charge on the steel to be plated. This then enables other, positively charged metals to form a film on the steel.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 data-for=\"Chrome\">Chrome<\/h2>\n<div class=\"section section-4\">\n<p>Creating a chrome plate requires several steps in plating steel. Repeating the same process over and over, first the steel is plated with copper, then nickel, and then finally chrome. Each metal has an affinity for the metal plated before it.
