About Project

The Alien franchise is loaded with cool space suits, some better than others. Alien leads the way with the suits the crew of the Nostromo’s uses for surface EVAs. These look appropriately designed for use in a harsh environment, while the space ship comes equipped with another space EVA suit stashed away in its shuttle. The suits in Alien: Covenant, which Adam Savage geeked out over at San Diego Comic-Con, are also dedicated-purpose designs, meant for light EVA and surface work. And then there’s the hard suit that’s used for more heavy lifting, and has a completely different design.

Our client ordered a helmet model which can be really worn. Our engineer paid a lot of effort to examine the tapping-screw and snap-fit structure. All the parts of the helmet are printed separately with SLS Nylon PA 12, which is best suited for snap-fit connections due to its tear resistance.

Solution

  • Step 1: Examine the 3D model of the helmet and make revisions to ensure all the snap-fit and tapping-screw designs are correct and precise.
  • Step 2: Print all the parts with SLS Nylon PA 12.
  • Step 3: Post-processing, like cleaning up the unused/unsintered powder.
  • Step 4: Assemble all the parts together and fix with screws. The face shield is painted black.
